What is the difference between a generation and an export meter?

If you export electricity to the grid and you don't have a smart meter, you might have two meters installed instead: a generation and an export meter. This is most usual when you have a Feed-in-Tariff.

Simplified:

  • Your generation meter measures the amount of electricity you are generating. Following the wires back from your solar panels this is usually the first meter; sitting between your solar and your fuse box (aka consumer unit).

  • Your export meter helps us calculate what you might be exporting back to the grid. This is usually the meter you find after your fuse box, and is connected to the wires that run in and out of your house from the grid.
