  1. Super cheap rates between 02:00 - 05:00 every day, when you can top up your battery with any extra energy you may need.

  2. A peak rate between 16:00 - 19:00, the optimum time to discharge your battery and export surplus energy back to the grid.

Constantine moving some solar panels

Here comes the sun

You need solar panels to be eligible for Octopus Flux, but they don't need to have been installed by us. If you're in the process of getting them installed, we can still start your switch.

You'll also need an Export MPAN to join Octopus Flux, if you don't have one yet we can apply for one for you.

Don't have solar yet but want an estimate? Check out our solar & battery page.

P.S. We'll need a copy of the MCS document for your installation before we can complete your switch.

Want to join Octopus Flux?

You'll need to:

  • 1

    Be an Octopus Energy customer

If you're not with us yet, switch to our standard tariff, Flexible Octopus, then return to this page to sign up to Octopus Tracker.

  • 2

Have a smart meter we can connect to

If you're a customer of ours already, check what type of meter you have on your online account under 'meters'.

We can connect to second generation (SMETS2) meters, and some types of first generation (SMETS1) smart meters.

If you're not a customer of ours yet, contact your current supplier to find out what meters you have. Don't forget – you need either a second generation SMETS2, or a SMETS1 made by Secure™, to be able to join a smart tariff. What if my meter is a SMETS1 that's been remotely upgraded by my supplier?

If your meter has a Secure logo on the front, we should be able to connect to it – this is a Secure™ SMETS1 meter.

  • 3

Hang tight while we connect to your smart meter

It generally takes us around 14 days to connect to a smart meter so we can read it remotely – whether it's one we've just installed, or one we're taking over after you switch to us. Read more on this.

  • 4

Accept our Terms & Conditions via email

Once we're connected and getting half–hourly readings from your smart meter, we'll send you an email asking you to accept the Terms & Conditions of Octopus Flux to complete your switch. Have a read of our smart tariff Terms & Conditions now.

    You're all good

Your tariff will change automatically to Octopus Flux. You should see the change straight away on your online account.

    Need some extra detail?

Octopus Flux is a three rate electricity tariff combining both import and export.

Octopus Flux is a combination tariff, meaning it's made up of an import and export tariff. The symmetrical import/export tariffs have three price periods throughout the day.

Yes, it is a flexible tariff. This means the unit rate and standing charges can rise and fall with wholesale energy prices.

When the rates of our flexible tariff changes, the price of Flux will also change. We'll always give reasonable notice of any changes to your prices, and there's no exit fees or tie-ins; you're free to switch tariffs or change suppliers at any time.

There's no exit fees or tie-ins, so if Octopus Flux doesn't work for you, you're free to switch tariffs or change suppliers with no penalties at any time.

    You'll need to have:

    • A smart meter providing us with half-hourly readings

    • A solar system and home battery

    • A copy of the MCS document or a FlexiOrb certificate for your solar system

    • Confirmation your local energy network was notified of your installation*

*This will be a letter or email you got from your energy network, after they were notified by your solar installer.

Without half-hourly readings we can't create bills and payments for Flux.

If you don't have a smart meter, add your name to the list and we'll contact you as soon as we have an engineer available.

Yes, you can join Octopus Flux if you have an electric vehicle.

Firstly, there is no requirement to switch your FiT generation contract to Octopus.

    Moving to Octopus Flux means:

Generation Tariff - your payments for energy generation will remain the same. You will not lose your generation tariff (and it should equate to the majority of your FiT income anyway).

Export Tariff - you will need to permanently opt-out of 'deemed export' payments. Instead, you'll receive the Octopus Flux export rate (which varies depending on your location) for every kWh actually exported, as measured by your smart meter.

If you receive FiT export payments from a supplier other than Octopus, we'll let you know when you need to contact them to cancel them. Once confirmed, we'll switch you to Octopus Flux.

If you leave Octopus Flux and / or Octopus Energy your 'Generation Tariff' will remain the same and your 'export tariff' will be paid at the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rate offered by your new tariff / new supplier.

There's no limit to the export rate set on our tariff, or on your smart meter, and the total electricity you export per month isn't limited.

However, your solar system won't be able to handle exporting energy beyond a certain point. Your solar panel installer will have ensured their maximum output will be within the limit of the breaker in your home (usually between 40 and 100 amps).

Number one and most important: no matter what your In-Home Display (IHD) - the little portable screen you get with smart meters - says, your super cheap period stays between 02:00 - 05:00 UK local time while your peak period stays between 16:00 - 19:00 UK local time all year round.

You should trust what we put on your bills. The IHD isn't really determining anything on your meter or tariff, rather just showing some information that might not be correct. Ultimately, our system is set up to account for changes due to daylight savings, so please don't worry: your bills and charges will be correct!

As an alternative, you can use the Octopus mobile app instead and be assured that you are seeing the correct information at all times.

Yes, with Octopus Flux you'll need to manually schedule your battery to charge and discharge based on Flux's unit rates. Generally, we'd recommend to charge your battery between 02:00 to 05:00 each night and to discharge between 16:00 to 19:00 when it'll be more expensive to import energy.

If you want us to control your battery for you (and you have a compatible battery), check out Intelligent Octopus Flux.
