What to expect at your insulation appointment

Home insulation keeps you warmer for less, and we’re really proud to install cavity wall and loft insulation for customers through the Great British Insulation Scheme and internal wall insulation through the ECO Scheme.

But when we say we’ll install insulation in your home, what exactly does that mean?

We can install most types of insulation in 2-3 hours – so it’s generally as simple as our friendly installers popping round to get the job done in half a day. If you’re having internal wall insulation, it’ll take around 5 days.

Ventilation

For any insulation to work well, your home needs good ventilation. They go hand in hand: insulation keeps the warmth in, ventilation makes sure moisture can still evaporate and escape to avoid damp. A well ventilated home will improve air quality which is much better for your health and well-being.

Before your insulation appointment we’ll visit your home and see whether it needs any extra ventilation. After this visit we’ll be in touch to let you know what ventilation we’ll need to install for you to be eligible for whichever scheme you’ve applied to.

That might include:

Extractor fan with measurements

Adding extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom

  • What is it? We’ll install small electric fans that detect and remove moisture to ventilate the room. The more moisture they detect, the harder they work. These are super common in modern homes, so you’ll have seen them before.
  • What do we have to do? Our installers will drill a 10cm hole through an external wall in any rooms with running water and install a fan. We’ll fit a cover to the exterior to stop any moisture or rain from getting in. Depending on the material of your walls this could be as quick as 10 minutes or up to one hour.
  • Why have them? Avoids damp and mould – plus it’s super handy to be able to clear the air if you burn your morning toast, or desteam the bathroom mirror after a shower.
Window with trickle vents installed

Adding trickle vents to your windows

  • What is it? We’ll install small openings in all your windows to allow a small amount of air to flow into a room to ventilate it, even when the window is closed. These vents can be opened and closed.
  • What do we have to do? Our installers will drill holes in the inside and outside of your window frames to screw the trickle vents in place.
  • Why have them? Provides ventilation, avoids condensation, and helps to remove stale air and nasty odours - securely, even when you’re not at home.
Internal door with bottom cut by 1-2 cm

Creating a little space under your internal doors

  • What is it? We’ll shave 1-2 cm off the bottom of the doors (depending on your type of flooring). The tiny gap won’t be noticeable to you but allows air to better flow between rooms.
  • What do we have to do? Our installers will take the doors off and shave a tiny bit of space on the bottom before fitting them back on. It typically takes 30 minutes for each door.
  • Why have it? Helps moist air to escape and fresh air to enter, reducing condensation and risk of mould. It also helps to improve air quality and even temperatures from room to room.

Types of insulation

Once your ventilation is fitted, our installers will be able to fit your home insulation during the same appointment. The best type of insulation for your home will be decided during your home survey.

We fit either loft or cavity wall insulation (but not both together) under the Great British Insulation Scheme or internal wall insulation under the ECO Scheme.

Loft insulation

  • What is it? We’ll install a lightweight loft roll insulation to stop heat loss through your roof.
  • What do we have to do? We’ll need you to remove any loft boards before we arrive so that we can access the loft to lay the insulation.
  • Why have them? Reduce the amount of heat escaping your home through your roof, which will help save money on your bills.

Cavity wall insulation

  • What is it? An insulation material that is injected between inner and outer walls to reduce heat loss.
  • What do we have to do? We’ll need to drill holes in your outside wall, inject the insulation, and seal the holes once we’re done. It should take about 2-3 hours.
  • Why have them? It’ll bring down heating and cooling costs to help you save money on your bill - and it improves fire safety too.

Internal wall insulation

  • What is it? Rigid insulation boards fitted directly to the interior of external-facing walls in your home.
  • What do we have to do? A plumber will remove radiators and an electrician will remove any sockets and light switches before the insulation can begin. We’ll install 10cm insulation and 1.25cm plasterboard before plastering on top. We’ll reconnect your radiators and make sure your sockets and light switches are working again before we leave. This can take 5 days to complete. We’ll also give you a £300 voucher to help with the cost of redecorating.
  • Why have them? It’ll improve energy efficiency, help to keep you cosy and save money on your bills - it can add value to your home too.

Hear from our customers

"I was understandably nervous about the installation. I have never had work completed to this degree before. However, there was no need for concern. From the moment the team arrived, they were very polite and professional. They all worked extremely hard while keeping me informed every step of the way. I was not left disappointed. The quality of work and cleanliness is to be applauded. Thanks to the whole team at Octopus Energy, my children now have a warm, damp free home. I will remain forever grateful.”

James, February 2024

"The installers minimised any disruption to me and informed me in advance as to how they were going to proceed and what they planned to do which helped me prepare myself for it. They were respectful of my property and stuff. If any issue they were happy to discuss and accommodate. Made me feel part of the process. I have nothing but praise for them. I am grateful to Octopus for having enabled this installation. Look forward to a warmer home this winter.”
