Join the Big Dirty Turn Down trial

Turn Down Trial Feb 2022

Our cutting-edge trial, in partnership with National Grid ESO, gives customers all over the UK free electricity for delaying energy use when the UK's energy mix is dirtiest.

It’s entirely free to get involved, your tariff and energy payments won’t change, and you can opt out any time.

While recent times in energy have been tough, there’s still good news: the UK is slowly but surely getting greener and greener.

Renewable generation is set to triple by 2030. If we had that much renewable energy available today, it would be enough to power the country almost twice over at the most energy-intensive times!

This will be a massive milestone for decarbonisation. Octopus was founded to bring cheaper, greener energy to the world, so we want as many green electrons in the grid as possible. But there’s a challenge: what happens when the wind doesn’t blow, and the sun doesn’t shine?

We’re trialling a solution to that fundamental challenge, and we need your help!

When the grid is struggling, dirty coal and diesel stations are fired up to satisfy the UK’s energy needs. Using the power of smart meters, we can demonstrate the massive potential of UK homes to collectively shift their energy usage, and prove those polluting options aren’t needed.

We’re working with National Grid ESO, the people who run the electricity network, to trial a big national ‘turndown’, where households come together to consciously use less energy at certain times – and get rewarded with free power for their efforts. While your own home might only be a small drop in the ocean, every ocean is made up of many drops; so put enough of them together and they soon add up.

Want to get involved? You'll need to...

  • Be an Octopus Energy electricity customer since December 1st 2021
  • Have a working smart meter, which sends us half-hourly reads
  • Not be on an export tariff (Outgoing, SEG, etc)

How will the trial work?

There’ll be five to ten events where you’ll need to try and use less power, over February and March, for a period of two hours. If you’re able to reduce your energy use by a target amount - which we’ll let you know ahead of time - you’ll get all of the electricity used during that two hour period at no cost.

A few hours before each event, we’ll send you a notification via email, text, or through the Octopus app. This will include the trial window timing and your personal target for that period.

All you need to do is turn everything down a bit, and we’ll use the data from your smart meter to do the rest.

How will you calculate my energy reduction targets?

×

Short answer: we'll work out what you typically use during the trial time slot based on your historical smart meter readings, and calculate a % we'd like you to reduce that by for each event.

Long answer: We'll look at your historical smart meter data to work out the average you used over the same time slot for the past month (so if we want you to Turn Down at 4-6pm on a Monday, we'll work out your typical energy use based on what you used between 4-6pm during the four previous Mondays).

We may set your target reduction differently to other customers as different people have different abilities to shift, e.g. if your evening consumption is normally 2kWh, we might ask you to drop to 1kWh, but if you're a typically low user we might ask you to reduce by a smaller %. Any energy you use below this target will be credited to your account at the unit rate of your supply agreement.

How will I be paid?

×

We’ll use the readings from your smart meter to calculate your energy charges during the two hour ‘turndown’ windows, and then credit your energy account for that amount within 2 weeks of each event.

Can I opt out at any time?

×

Of course – just click the opt out link in pre-turndown notification email we send.

Will this affect my energy tariff or payments?

×

No, neither will be affected. You’ll be charged for energy as normal throughout the trial. We’ll make your energy free within the two hour turndown windows by crediting your energy account.

Do I have to give meter readings manually to take part?

×

No – you need a working smart meter for this trial, which means we can take meter readings automatically to calculate what you’ve used. All you need to focus on is finding ways to turn down your energy use – we’ll do the rest.
