Agile Octopus is one of our innovative beta smart tariffs, helping bring cheaper and greener power to all our customers, but is directly impacted by wholesale market volatility.
Agile prices can spike up to 100 p/kWh any time - although a typical household in Winter '22-'23 paid around 35 p/kWh average.
This tariff is best suited to customers who can shift large amounts of their energy use to avoid these expensive peaks, often by using smart home technologies like solar and batteries.
With Agile Octopus, you get access to half-hourly energy prices, tied to wholesale prices and updated daily. So when wholesale electricity prices drop, so do your bills – and if you can shift your daily electricity use outside of peak times, you can save even more.
Across the UK, whenever more electricity is generated than consumed, energy prices fall – sometimes to the point where prices drop below zero, and suppliers are paid to take energy off the grid.
Agile Octopus introduces Plunge Pricing – a world first that lets you take advantage of these negative price events, and get paid for the electricity you use. You'll receive alerts whenever prices drop below zero, and you can use our Agile API to program your smart devices.
Between July 2020 and July 2021, unit prices dropped below 2p / kWh 163 times!
When more electricity is being used than generated, wholesale prices rise. While price spikes are short-lived, typically lasting 30 minutes to an hour, they do happen. Agile Octopus includes Price Cap Protect, which ensures you'll never pay more than 100p / kWh for your electricity, guaranteed.
Agile's prices are often cheaper when the energy in the grid is greener, and more expensive when energy's dirtier (usually between 4-7pm, when the UK's fossil fuel generating stations have been turned on to meet high demand).
When Agile Octopus customers shift their energy usage to access the cheapest rates, they reduce the need to burn as many fossil fuels during ‘peak times’, and help us get the most out of green energy when it's abundant. This way, Agile rewards you for helping drive the green energy revolution — making a 100% renewable energy system possible on a massive scale.

If you're not with us yet, sign up below and you'll join us on one of our standard tariffs initially while we connect all the dots behind the scenes.
We can connect to second generation (SMETS2) meters, and some types of first generation (SMETS1) smart meters.
It generally takes us around 14 days to connect to a smart meter so we can read it remotely – whether it's one we've just installed, or one we're taking over after you switch to us. Read more on this.
Once we're connected and getting half–hourly readings from your smart meter, we'll send you an email asking you to accept the Terms & Conditions of Agile Octopus to complete your switch. Have a read of our smart tariff Terms & Conditions now..
Your tariff will change automatically to Agile Octopus. You should see the change straight away on your online account.
Agile Octopus is a beta product. Some things may not work the first time, and installations and processes may take longer than we'd like. Third party tech like In-home Displays won't always work, and on occasion data issues with smart meters can take significant time to fix or prevent things from working at all.
If you're cool with this, and you'd still like to work with us to make world-changing energy tariffs a reality, check this box so we know you're on board. You will always be able to switch to one of our fairly priced standard tariffs at any time.

No problem. We'll get you up and running, and install a smart meter if you need one at no extra charge.
Between 4-8pm every day (usually nearer 4pm), your unit rates are updated for the next 24 hours, based on the wholesale market rates.
As you use electricity we'll use the half-hourly data from your smart meter to calculate your charges.
A daily standing charge covers costs including metering, distribution, and other fixed costs.
Agile Octopus is unlike any other energy tariff. Its dynamic pricing unlocks the opportunity for customers to make savings by shifting their electricity use to times when it's cheaper (and greener).
Agile prices vary a lot based on trends in the wholesale energy market (our energy boffins blog regularly about it). Currently, soaring global gas prices have pushed wholesale prices to record highs: they've increased over 400% since the start of 2021. This means Agile's prices are consistently high right now, and it's likely you'll save more money by sticking to a standard variable or fixed tariff throughout the Winter.
