A billion (s)quid back: Octopus smart tariff customers cash in

  • Smart tariffs have saved Octopus customers almost £1 billion over the past years, with £200 million saved this year alone

  • 1 million Octopus customers are slashing their bills through smart tech and by using energy at cheaper times of day

  • Milestone comes as more households turn to electric cars, heat pumps and solar panels to take control of energy costs

London, 15th June 2026 - Octopus Energy's smart tariffs have helped customers save almost £1 billion on their energy bills over the past years, with over £200 million saved so far in 2026 alone*.

Since the launch of Octopus Tracker in 2017, Octopus has led the way with smart energy innovation, pioneering a new generation of tariffs that turn Britain's growing supply of cheap, renewable power into real savings for customers.

By encouraging households to use energy at the cheapest and greenest times, Octopus’ cutting-edge smart tariffs have helped one million customers cut their bills, while also reducing strain on the grid and lowering wider energy system costs.

Powered by nifty smart meters, smart tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go, Agile Octopus and Cosy Octopus reward customers for shifting their energy use to times when renewable power is abundant. From smart EV charging to intelligent home heating, smart tariffs help households access cheaper, greener power and slash bills.

Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO at Octopus Energy, said: “The energy transition should be done for people, not to them. By focusing relentlessly on innovation, we've built smart tariffs that deliver real savings for customers – now totalling nearly £1 billion.

“Every time customers shift energy use away from peak periods – whether charging EVs, running appliances, or heating their homes – they make energy cheaper and cleaner for everyone. It’s no different from traveling off-peak: shifting demand unlocks cheaper deals and a more efficient system for everyone.”

The record-breaking milestone comes as more people look for ways to take control of their energy future. Octopus has seen booming demand for EVs, heat pumps, home batteries and smart tariffs, as households embrace technologies that can help cut bills, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and protect against global fossil fuel price shocks.
