London, 25 September 2023 - Octopus Energy today announces the expansion of its pioneering ‘Fan Club’ wind tariff, bringing the benefits of cheaper clean power to customers living near offshore wind farms.

Starting with communities living along the coastline from Grimsby to Skegness, ‘Fan Club’ customers in this area will be able to get up to 50% off their electricity when their local offshore wind farm is producing lots of wind powered electricity.

Octopus’s groundbreaking ‘Fan Club’ first launched in 2021 for customers living close to one of its onshore wind turbines in Market Weighton and Halifax, Yorkshire, and Caerphilly, Wales. Since then Octopus has received over 20,000 requests for local wind turbines in communities. The popular scheme has now also expanded into the US and Germany.

The launch of Octopus’ offshore ‘Fan Club’ comes as dozens of lucky Octopus customers set sail over summer on the HMS Octopus to see the Lincs wind farm up close - which generates enough clean power for 240,000 homes every year.

This year alone, homegrown offshore wind up and down the coastline of the country has produced 14% of Britain’s electricity*.

The boat trip followed a competition for customers to come see the wind farm, which generated a flurry of excitement as hundreds of customers competed for a seat via Twitter. It reinforces Britain’s continuing obsession with offshore wind as 85% of people support this energy source**.

This follows fast on the heels of Octopus’ announcement to unleash £15 billion ($20bn) of investment in offshore wind globally. In the UK, Octopus has stakes in the Lincs offshore wind farm and one of the world’s largest wind farms, Hornsea One – both off the east coast of England, as it scales its offshore wind activity in the UK and across the globe.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, said: “Our ‘Fan Club’ demonstrates just how much people love wind in Britain. It’s fantastic to now expand this pioneering scheme to those living near offshore wind farms too. People overlooking these majestic wind farms along the coastlines from Grimsby to Skegness will now be able to benefit from cheaper electricity which it’s windy.

“We’ve loved bringing customers out to see the Lincs offshore wind farm. Our customers inspire us massively - they are highly engaged members of the energy system, passionate about participating in the transition to a greener energy future while making savings on their bills at the same time.”
