Pump it up! Octopus Energy celebrates 10,000th Cosy heat pump made in Northern Ireland
Cosy customers on a dedicated heat pump tariff save an average of £230 a year compared with a gas boiler – rising to nearly £350 if they cut the gas standing charge
570,000 people contacted Octopus about getting a heat pump in the past 18 months – around a third of the annual boiler replacement market
91% of surveyed Octopus customers say they are happy with their heat pump
Comes as Cosy is named one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2026
London, 15th October – Thousands of households are turning up the heat on gas-free living as Octopus Energy celebrates building its 10,000th Cosy heat pump – three years after setting up its factory in Portadown, Northern Ireland.
The milestone comes during National Heat Pump Week, and on the same day TIME Magazine named the Octopus Cosy 12 one of the Best Inventions of 2026.
Previous winners of the prestigious accolade include tech that has revolutionised its respective sectors, including the Apple iPhone (2007), Dyson Air Multiplier (2009) and the Tesla Model S (2012).
Cosy is designed to make switching from a gas boiler as simple as possible, without turning a home upside down.
A size for every home: Cosy comes in three sizes – 6kW, 9kW and 12kW – so there's a model to suit everything from a small house to a large family home.
Keep your radiators: Its high-temperature design means it needs fewer – and often no – changes to existing radiators and pipework, making installation quicker and cheaper.
Built to a higher standard: Every Cosy is built by Octopus Energy's in-house experts to exceed MCS industry standards.
Gets better with age: Just like a smartphone, Cosy updates itself remotely to unlock new features, getting smarter over time.
Smart savings built in: Paired with the Cosy Octopus tariff, its smart algorithms schedule a home’s heating and hot water into three cheap off-peak windows a day to maximise savings.
Households on the Cosy Octopus tariff save an average of £230 a year compared with a standard gas boiler.
That figure rises to nearly £350 for those who ditch gas completely and no longer pay the gas standing charge – all while cutting their home's carbon emissions by over 80%.
It comes as demand for heat pumps is soaring. 570,000 people have contacted Octopus about getting one in the past 18 months – equivalent to roughly a third of the annual gas boiler replacement market.
And those who've made the switch are loving it: 9 out of 10 (89%)% of surveyed Octopus customers say they are satisfied with their heat pump.*
The milestone comes hot on the heels of the launch of Cosy Cooler, a new gadget that turns a Cosy heat pump into a home cooling system.
Cosy Cooler adapts homes with a Cosy to keep them cool in summer as well as warm in winter – without needing to install a separate air-conditioning unit.
The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which helps households with the cost of installing a heat pump, has played an important role in getting the market moving and making innovations like Cosy possible.
Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, said: “Ten thousand Cosy heat pumps means ten thousand homes with a better, cheaper way to heat – and every single one was built by our brilliant team in Northern Ireland.
"Half a million people have asked us about heat pumps in the last 18 months, and the ones who've switched love them.
“The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has helped get us here. We need to keep backing it so heat pumps can scale further and soon become affordable without subsidy – and the way to get there is by growing the market, not pulling support away too soon.”
