Octopus Energy snaps up Danish tech startup BD Energy to boost its power trading capabilities
Deal brings Danish automated power trading specialist into Octopus Energy Trading
BD Energy uses its own technology to automatically trade electricity across 15 international markets
99% of BD Energy’s power trades are automated
London / Aarhus, 1st September 2026 – Octopus Energy has today announced the acquisition of BD Energy, a fast-growing Danish tech startup specialising in fully automated trading, to further boost the company’s tech stack.
Founded in 2022, BD Energy focuses exclusively on ‘short-term’ markets – the final 24 hours down to the exact moment power flows into the grid.
Its state-of-the-art technology automatically buys and sells electricity in those markets, using data and algorithms to make ultra-fast and efficient trading decisions.
Its platform crunches huge amounts of data – from electricity prices and supply and demand to weather forecasts – and uses machine learning to spot opportunities and make trades automatically, with around 99% of its trades being algorithmic.
The company employs 31 people and has rapidly grown since launching in Denmark. It now operates across 25 electricity pricing zones in 15 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands and the US.
BD Energy will now become part of Octopus Energy Trading, giving the company access to Octopus’ capital and technology to increase the amount of electricity it trades and expand into new markets around the world.
Octopus Energy Trading is the power trading arm of Octopus Energy Group. It uses technology to buy and sell electricity and help manage the changing supply of renewable energy.
The transaction will take effect immediately, with BD Energy’s founding team, leadership, and staff continuing to operate from Denmark.
Frederik Vinkler, Co-Founder at BD Energy, said: "We founded BD Energy with the ambition of building a new generation of energy trading company – one where technology is the foundation of the business, rather than simply a tool used by traders.
“What made Octopus the ideal partner for us was our shared green mindset, coupled with their entrepreneurial culture and scale. With Octopus’s backing, we can deploy our proprietary algorithms across larger volumes and bring our automated trading infrastructure to new markets worldwide."
Matt Bunney, Managing Director at Octopus Energy Trading, said: "What BD Energy has achieved in just a few years is remarkable.
“By bringing their tech under the Octopus Energy Trading umbrella, we're combining two highly entrepreneurial, tech-first teams.
“Their capabilities in short-term markets will significantly boost our power trading infrastructure and supercharge how we optimise flexibility in key markets worldwide."
