Octopus Energy halves on-street charging costs for millions of drivers without driveways
- Octopus pioneers 50% off kerbside charging for drivers who lease their EVs
- Drive for as little as 7p per mile for the first time ever by charging up via Octopus Electroverse
- Initially launching at 20,000 UK charge points, Octopus to rapidly expand the offer across more brands and locations
London, 2nd April 2026 – Octopus Energy is making it easier and cheaper for more people to switch to electric, thanks to a new first-of-its-kind offer that unlocks 50% cheaper kerbside charging for drivers without a driveway.
Through Octopus Electric Vehicles (OEV), the UK's largest EV-only leasing company, new customers can now charge on-street from as little as 22.5p per kWh (7p a mile), making the switch to electric cheaper and more accessible than ever before.
While a third of motorists feel that home charging is the final 'nudge'* they need to go electric, the reality of EV driving has already shifted gears. There are now nearly double the amount of EV chargers in the UK than petrol pumps**, meaning that for those without a drive, charging on the go is now more accessible than filling up ever was.
The savings are also significant. A full charge for a typical MG4 electric car would cost around £16 at the discounted rate, about 7p per mile. That is only around 5p per mile more than smart charging at home and half the cost of running a petrol-guzzling Volkswagen Golf at around 17p per mile and £75 a tank.
Initially launching at 20,000 chargepoints from on-street charging specialists Ubitricity and Connected Kerb, Octopus plans to roll out the offering to more locations and brands across the UK.
OEV drivers will be able to scoop up the savings by powering up through Octopus Electroverse, Europe’s largest public charging network.
Gurjeet Grewal, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, commented: “We’re making EV driving cheap for everyone, not just those with driveways. We’ve already helped thousands of drivers switch to electric but the landscape is changing fast, and more people without driveways are becoming EV-curious. With the increased prevalence of affordable kerbside charging and cars, now’s the perfect time to offer drivers a bundle designed for those who can’t charge at home.
“By cutting kerbside charging costs in half, even more drivers can enjoy the savings and simplicity of going electric – and we’re thrilled to help people from all corners of the UK join the EV revolution.”
Matt Davies, Founder and Director of Octopus Electroverse, said: “For too long, not having a driveway has meant paying more to go electric. That's never sat right with us. EVs are getting cheaper, technology is getting better, and now public charging is catching up, too.
“And this is just the start – we're already gearing up to bring more networks on board to expand the offer, and the door is wide open for charge point operators who want to join us.“
The offer comes hot on the heels of Octopus reporting a 36% spike in EV leasing interest, as volatile fuel prices push more consumers towards the stability of electric.
Octopus has been leading the charge for drivers looking for simple charging on the go. Boasting over 1 million drivers, Electroverse is now offering access to over 1.3 million public chargers globally, making locating and topping as smooth as the ride itself.
The offer is now available for a limited time to new customers leasing an electric vehicle through Octopus EV. Full details can be found on the Octopus EV website.
