1 million customers for every tentacle: Octopus Energy supercharges to 8 million customers in the UK

  • The UK’s largest energy supplier announces hitting 8 million home energy customers, with 2500 new customers joining daily

  • Market leading support for customers now includes You Pay We Pay, OctoAssist fund and the extension of their electric blanket scheme for Winter 2026

  • The milestone coincides with a doubling in heat pump sales and a ¾ rise in solar sales as households shift to trusting in home grown power

London, 24th April 2026 – Octopus Energy has surpassed 8 million customers in the UK, further cementing its position as the nation’s largest energy supplier.

With 2500 customers switching to Octopus every day, the gap has widened since Octopus claimed the top spot in January 2025, the first time the market lead had changed hands since privatisation in 1986.

As global energy markets remain volatile with an uneasy ceasefire in the Middle East, consumers are increasingly seeking stability – and they are turning to Octopus in droves.

While the wider market has faced upheaval, Octopus has consistently used its tech-driven efficiency to pass savings directly to consumers.

They also continue to lead in customer support: through its £40m Octo Assist fund, electric blanket programme and the innovative "You Pay, We Pay" scheme – which has already helped 110,000 customers clear debt via matched payments.

From an in-house team of social workers to the UK's first Balance Forecaster tool, Octopus empowers households with the transparency and practical help they need to stay in control of their finances and navigate affordability issues with dignity.

The growth comes as Octopus also leads a national shift toward low-carbon technology.

Since the onset of recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Octopus has seen a 103% surge in heat pump sales and a 78% increase in solar panel sales as households look to turn to home grown power and "electrify" their way out of global fossil fuel shocks.*

Octopus’s trust ratings are also more than 50% higher than industry rivals, a YouGov survey last month found.**

The supplier has consistently held a 5-star Trustpilot rating and is the only energy firm to be a Which? Recommended Provider for nine consecutive years.

Recent surveys confirm the company remains the most trusted name in the sector, attracting everyone from tech-adopters cutting bills with EVs to older customers who simply value a company that answers the phone.

Octopus has a prudent hedging strategy – meaning it manages risk carefully even as wholesale prices increase – and uses the industry-leading Kraken technology platform to pass efficiency savings onto customers.

Greg Jackson, Founder & CEO of Octopus Energy, said: “A big part of my reason for starting Octopus was that the energy sector suffered from poor levels of trust across the board with opaque pricing, non-existent communication and terrible customer service.

“I’m very proud that we have built a company that people are turning to in difficult times because they know we’ll do our best to look after them.

“It proves people want more than just a bill every month; they want a supplier who is trusted to give them a great deal, speak with them honestly in difficult times and provide outstanding customer service. Eight million customers can’t be wrong.”

Octopus continues to pioneer the smart transition, providing innovative tariffs and schemes that serve as the blueprint for national initiatives, including NESO’s Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) and the government’s recently announced energy turn-up trials.

By rewarding customers for using green energy when it is abundant, Octopus has returned £10.5 million to participants over the last few years, proving that the green transition is a financial win for households.

Hearing it straight from the customers, Hazel from Essex commented: "We have been very impressed with Octopus since joining them some years ago. We love that on every statement we are told if we could save money by switching to another Octopus tariff – and switching is easy.”

Rizuan from Leicestershire said: “The best thing that has happened to me in many years was moving to octopus energy. They have looked after me in ways I can’t imagine. I have never experienced this before anywhere else with other energy companies.”
