New Connections: get your supply up and running
Need a property connected to the grid?
We’ve Got You Covered.
You'll need your supply point number and photos of the supply point or the date you're being connected to the grid.
What you need to know

Is this the right place?
This page is for domestic customers without a gas and/or electricity meter. That includes new builds, conversions, and properties where a meter was previously removed.

How long does it take?
These jobs can take between 4 and 6 weeks. In some cases, depending on the region or any high-capacity connections, it can take longer.

Who does what?
Octopus will sort the metering side of these jobs. You will need to have the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for electricity and/or Gas Distribution Network (GDN) for gas to sort the incoming supply from the grid first.
If you require 4 or more meters per fuel type at a single site, please email getconnected@octopus.energy.

Where to start?
Before we can install your smart meter, your property needs a gas and/or electricity connection to the grid, or one planned.
If this isn’t in place yet, your DNO (electricity) or GDN (gas) can help you get started. They will also provide your supply numbers (MPAN for electricity and MPRN for gas). Once you have these, we can register you as a supplier and get started on planning your installation.

What to expect
After you’ve contacted the DNO and completed the request form, we’ll be in touch to review your request. We may need a bit more information, but in most cases, we can book your appointment straight away.
We’re here to guide you through every step of the journey. If things feel confusing or you’re just not sure what comes next, just ask. Our team of energy experts are always on hand.
Timeline
Your DNO gives you a date to connect your home to the grid.
Once you have the date (or if the supply is already in place), you’re ready to fill out our request form so we can install the smart meter.
We’ll set up your account and get everything ready for your new meter. Typically, we’d book your metering appointment for a few days after your incoming supply has been set up by the DNO.
If you weren't able to attach photos of the incoming supply (the cutout for electricity or the emergency control valve for gas) in your initial request, you'll need to email them once the supply is installed. You can reach us here: getconnected@octopus.energy.
We’ll install your smart meter(s) and get your supply live and ready.
Your electrician and/or gas safe engineer finishes the internal wiring or pipework.
If you already have the supply installed, you can get going on filling out the request form.
Frequently asked questions
Some meter types may take longer, for example, U6 gas meters or three-phase electricity meter installations.
This is due to meter technician availability and the region where you live. We’ll always try our best to get everything sorted as quickly as possible.
Yes! We install whole-current (WC) three-phase meters, but we don’t install CT electricity meters.
We do! These involve third-party operators and take longer to book, so please give us a heads-up as soon as your supply is planned.
We currently only set up new connections for domestic properties. However, if you have multiple business sites with us and a usage volume of 100 MWh or more, you can contact our business team.
No. Your grid connection needs to be live on-site before we can install the meter.
Not necessarily, but you’ll need the owner’s consent before we make any changes.
About 4-6 weeks before you need the meter installed.
No. These are planned works that require coordination with the DNO. If you’ve lost power after an install, email emergency@octopus.energy.
Your network operator (DNO or GDN) will give you these unique ID numbers once you’ve paid for your connection.
The DNO will most likely charge for a new connection and, in some cases, for a quote even if you do not accept it. At Octopus, smart meters are installed at no extra cost, but occasionally additional metering work may be needed. If anything further is needed, we will let you know as soon as possible.
Yes, as long as the correct details are on the national databases. Feel free to get in touch with us to check this.
No, it’s not compulsory to have a smart meter installed. However, we recommend upgrading. Smart meters can save you time, effort and money by helping you manage your energy more efficiently.
Traditional meters are also no longer manufactured or refurbished, so for a new connection, a smart meter will be offered.
Yes, you can apply for them at the same time. We won’t always be able to get the meters installed on the same day due to meter technician availability.
In most cases, we can facilitate a temporary supply - get in touch to find out more.
