What's the average cost for standard solar installation?
Average costs
The cost of installation can depend on how many panels you need, whether you choose to have battery storage, and what size of battery you require. The cost of a panel-only installation by Octopus starts from £6,163 (for 2 panels). An 8 panel installation and a 5kWh battery costs £8,123 with an essential battery or £9,691 with a smart battery. All costs are based on October 2025 prices.
You'll have the option to pay monthly with a fixed-term loan, or pay in full after installation. We'll ask you to pay a non-refundable deposit of £500 when you sign your installation agreement.
Find out how long it takes for a solar system to pay for itself.
What does a standard installation include?
Your quote will be inclusive of your chosen number of solar panels and battery option, microinverters (if necessary) and all other electrical components required to complete the install. Plus labour, delivery costs, scaffolding and our 5-star customer support from start to finish.
Bird proofing will come at an additional cost. We'll provide a final quote once your solar design is complete.
Is my home suitable for an Octopus solar installation?
For an Octopus solar installation, you will need to own your home, and you will need a clear space on a pitched roof (aka not flat) that can fit at least 2 solar panels. See our FAQ on how much space you'll need for panel sizes.
Please note that we're not able to install solar for flats or properties with a 3 phase electricity meter just yet.
It's important that this part of your roof sees the sun throughout the day, so a north facing roof will generate less power, and could be unsuitable. We'll also need to be able to install scaffolding below the roof where the panels will be fitted in order to complete the installation.
If Octopus are unable to install solar at your home, we may be able to recommend an Octopus Trusted Trader to complete the job for you, with equivalent care and quality.
Check out the full list of solar installation requirements and considerations.
How easy is it to control and manage my solar usage?
Following installation, we’ll ask that you install the Fox app, Enphase app, or Tesla app, depending on which brand of inverter you have installed.
With the mobile app, you’ll be able to monitor and manage your usage anytime, anywhere. It’s really simple to use, and simple to control when you need to. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
How long does it take to install solar and do I have to be there?
Standard installs can be completed within 2 days, and bigger installs can take between 3-4 days. If you need to be elsewhere, no problem - we just ask that you’re in the property whilst we do the wiring, which will take a few hours on one day.
Should I get battery storage installed too?
This depends on both how much electricity you generate and when you use it most. For example, if you tend to use a lot of energy in the evening, we’ll probably recommend a battery. This is because you won’t be there to use the energy when the sun is brightest during the day; instead you can store the electricity in the battery for use in the evening. You may also be able to save more with a battery when paired with one of our solar smart tariffs.
Our lives are varied, so there are many more circumstances that might impact this decision - but this is something that our solar advisors will be able to help you with. Find out more about savings here.
If you'd like a battery-only installation and don't need solar panels, check out our blog to find out more.
What's the average cost for standard heat pump installation?
Our typical heat pump price is £3,818 which is lower than the national average of £5,295. This is the median post-survey price from all of our heat pump quotes, between June and September 2025 compared to the national average shown in Boiler Upgrade Statistics: July 2025.
The quickest way to find out how much a heat pump will cost for you is to get a quote. We ask for a few quick details, and use this together with other clever data sources, such as your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and energy usage, to calculate your estimated cost.
We'll be able to let you know exactly what you need and how much it costs, including necessary additional works after your no obligation home survey. Find out more about potential additional costs in the Cost, grants and savings section.
Can I pay for my heat pump on finance?
You can pay in one go or spread the cost with monthly payments. If you'd like to pay on finance, we can connect you with Novuna who can arrange loans between 5 and 10 years, subject to status and affordability. Explore finance options.
Is my home suitable for a heat pump installation?
Heat pumps can work in nearly all homes, but as we scale up, there are a few limitations on homes we’re able to install in right now, such as flats, properties that don't have enough space inside or outside. If we're not able to install a heat pump for you just yet, we'll let you know after you complete the initial form, or after your home survey.
Our dedicated team of scientists and engineers at our Research & Development centre are working hard to find cost-effective heat pump solutions for homes with specialised needs.
Check out this list of installation requirements and considerations.
Does the tech come with a warranty?
All of our equipment comes with a manufacturer warranty:
- Solar Panels: 25 years product warranty and 30 years linear power warranty.
- Inverter: Enphase Microinverters come with a product warranty of 25 years, whilst the GivEnergy inverter is covered by a 12 year product warranty.
- Batteries: 12 years for GivEnergy products and 15 years for Enphase products.
- Heat pumps: 8 years for Cosy and 5 years for Daikin.
Our customers are also protected by a 5 year Workmanship Warranty Insurance scheme.
The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme - how does it work?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a grant from the Government offering:
- £7,500 off the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump, or
- £5,000 off the cost of a biomass boiler
It aims to encourage homeowners to replace their existing fossil fuel heating system with one that's more efficient and better for the environment.
And unlike other government schemes, there’s no income rules or need to be claiming benefits to be able to apply. As it’s a grant it doesn’t need to be repaid to the government at any point.
So as long as your home is suitable for a heat pump it’s very likely you’ll be able to benefit from the £7,500 grant.
The grant is automatically applied to all our quotes and we take care of all the paperwork for you, plus the cost of a new Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) if you need one.
Check out this blog for further details on the scheme.
My quote isn't showing a 5% discount - what gives?
Your Santander discount won't appear on your initial quote - this is because we'll need to check a few things before we know the final cost of your install.
For heat pumps, your discount will be applied on your final sales agreement provided by the Octopus sales team.
For solar, your discount will be applied on your proposals provided by the sales team.
Our claims explained
Save around 90% on electricity bills with solar & battery power
This is the electricity bill saving for a medium use home, with a 10 panel and 5kWh battery system on a standard tariff with our fixed outgoing rate (£81), compared to no solar installation on a standard tariff (£904). This is a saving of £823 or 91% of their total electricity bill. See our solar savings blog for full details and calculations.
Make up to £300 profit a year with Intelligent Octopus Flux
Between June 2024 and May 2025, the top 12% of Intelligent Octopus Flux customers paid less for the energy they imported than they earned for exporting their solar energy back to the grid. They offset their full electricity bill and standing charge and made £314 or more profit on top.
Thousands of Octopus customers paid nothing for their electricity bills last year, thanks to solar, battery & our smart tariffs
From the 1st June 2024 to 31st May 2025, 4,829 customers on our Octopus Flux and Intelligent Octopus Flux tariffs earned enough from exporting their electricity to the grid to fully cover their usage and standing charge.
A solar system can increase the value of your home
Analysis by the Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge suggests a 16% value uplift for new-build homes with enough solar and battery storage to eliminate energy bills. A further study of over five million existing properties indicates a 2-3% value increase for existing homes with solar panels or heat pumps (versus like-for-like gas-heated homes). According to the Sustainable Markets Initiative: Cleantech Homes report, 2024.
Cut carbon emissions by around 80% with a heat pump:
This is the typical reduction in heating carbon emissions using an electric powered heat pump compared to a gas boiler, based on the following calculation:
Gas CO2 = (A*D) = 2.42 tonnes per year
Electricity CO2 = (A/B*C*E) = 0.40 tonnes per year
Carbon saving = 2.01 tonnes or 83%
Where A - E are:
A - 11,500 Ofgem medium gas usage
B - 330% typical seasonal coefficient of performance from a fleet of Octopus low temperature heat pumps
C - 85% typical gas boiler efficiency from a BEIS study
D - Gas fuel emissions of 210 gCO2/kWh (SAP 10.2)
E - Electricity fuel emissions of 136 gCO2/kWh (SAP 10.2)
These are typical install efficiencies for gas boilers and low temperature heat pumps installed in real homes (like Cosy Eco). See our heat pump savings blog for the full set of calculations and assumptions.
Efficiency / A heat pump is up to 4x more efficient than a gas boiler:
Octopus Cosy heat pumps can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity. For every 1 kWh of electricity you put in, you could get an average of 3.3kWh heat out, which is an efficiency of 330%! All our heat pumps are tested independently by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and their energy efficiency ratings, called Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP), are publicly available on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) product database. When we design a system, we design to a 3.4 SCOP in-situ standard.
Heat pumps don't create heat, but move existing heat from nature into your home (like an air conditioner or refrigerator, but in reverse). When you burn stuff to generate heat (like gas, oil, or wood), you are instead creating heat by converting matter to energy - so you can never get more than one unit of heat for each unit of energy you burn. Gas boilers in UK homes are only around 85% efficient, so for every 1 kWh of gas you put in, you get around 0.85kWh of heat out, which is nearly 4x less efficient than a heat pump.
These are typical install efficiencies for gas boilers and low temperature heat pumps installed in real homes (like Cosy Eco). See our heat pump saving blog for the full set of calculations and assumptions.
Heat pumps vs gas boilers
Lifespan: the expected lifespan of a gas boiler is 10-15 years. A heat pump lifetime is typically 20 years based on a UK government study. Various research from brands such as Carrier and Daikin have also found that a heat pump lifespan is typically between 15 to 20 years.
Heating costs: Based on a low temperature air source heat pump (Cosy Eco). Check out our blog on heat pump running costs for a full breakdown of our running cost calculations.
Efficiency & emissions: See above
Heat pumps give reliable, consistent heating and hot water
The heat pump user survey report by Nesta from May 2023 summarises that “users are highly satisfied with their heat pumps”. It states “People living in England, Scotland and Wales who own their home and use a heat pump to heat it are satisfied that heat pumps are safe, reliable, quiet heat sources that are effective for space heating and producing hot water”. Find the full report here.
Homes with a heat pump have cleaner air
Research shows that using a heat pump to power heating and cooking emits less harmful nitrous oxide (which has been identified in the report as a contributor to asthma and other respiratory illnesses) when compared to using a gas boiler for this. For more info see Sustainable Markets Initiative Cleantech homes report.
Our customer testimonials:
Customer testimonials are from Octopus Energy's survey of heat pump customers, conducted in January 2025
Save around £370 a year with a heat pump compared to a gas boiler
We expect a medium use home to save around £368 a year, running a Cosy Eco heat pump on our Cosy Octopus 12 month fixed tariff with no gas supply, compared to a gas boiler on a standard tariff. See the our heat pump savings blog for full details and calculations.

A heat pump can add thousands to your property value
Analysis by the Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge suggests a 16% value uplift for new-build homes with enough solar and battery storage to eliminate energy bills. A further study of over five million existing properties indicates a 2-3% value increase for existing homes with solar panels or heat pumps (versus like-for-like gas-heated homes). According to the Sustainable Markets Initiative: Cleantech Homes report, 2024.
As of April 2025, the average house price in the UK is £265,497 according to Land Registry. Therefore, a 2-3% value increase for an average house priced at £265,497 would be between £5,310 and £7,965.
