No, you don't have to have a smart meter installed.
We heartily recommend you do, though, as they'll save you a lot of time and hassle, and can even help you use less energy and at cheaper times.
If you would like a smart meter, register your interest, and we'll send you an email when we have appointments in your area.
You can also head to your online account to get booked in - you'll need to choose a date and time that works for you, and we'll sort the rest!
Across the industry, we're upgrading SMETS1 first-generation smart meters by enrolling them in the Data Communications Company (DCC) network so they keep their smart functionality.
SMETS1 meters that can't be successfully enrolled will be replaced with SMETS2 meters at no additional cost. SMETS2 are the new generation of smart meters; they will stay smart if you switch supplier and offer increased functionality and flexibility to be future-ready for developments in smart tariffs and smart home tech.
Do you have a SMETS1 meter that needs to be upgraded? No worries, we'll be in touch shortly to book you in for your meter upgrade as soon as we have engineers available in your area.
If you have a traditional meter that breaks or have one that is past its certification date, we will install a smart meter.
Traditional meters are no longer being manufactured or refurbished, making them increasingly difficult to source.
We also need to comply with targets for the national rollout of smart meters set by Ofgem, which requires energy suppliers to take all reasonable steps to install smart meters for all new connections and replacement meters at domestic and non-domestic premises.
