Sungen: A bright future for renewables in France

Sungen is more than just a solar project—it’s a bold vision for the future of energy in France. Spearheaded and funded by Octopus Energy Generation, Sungen is all about making renewable energy more accessible. We’ve started by funding the construction of over 100 rooftop solar systems across France. These installations will initially generate around 10 megawatts of clean energy, which is enough to power about 3,000 homes each year. But we’re not stopping there. Our goal is to go beyond 100 megawatts of solar energy by 2030, giving a huge boost to France’s renewable energy supply.

This is part of our larger plan to invest €1 billion into France’s green energy market to help accelerate the rollout of renewables across the country. But our aspirations go far beyond the borders of any country. In the UK and beyond, Octopus Energy Generation is transforming the the renewable energy space. We’re upgrading 1,000 older wind turbines to produce 2-3 times more green energy and helping local communities invest and save on renewables through our Fan Club. Globally, we manage £6.7 billion in renewable assets, powering 2.3 million homes each year, with each investment bringing us closer to our goals of a cleaner, greener world.

What makes this project truly special is the innovative approach we’re taking to make this project a success. We’re not just installing solar panels— we’re offering them large, new solar sheds for storage on their land in exchange for using their rooftops for solar panels. This means that French farmers can save millions by getting valuable infrastructure for their work, while we generate clean energy that feeds into the national grid.

This synergy between agriculture and renewable energy isn’t just beneficial—it’s transformative. Farmers gain access to new facilities that support their work, while France moves closer to a sustainable energy future.
