The Future Homes Standard is finally here. Here's what it means for you.
Last updated: 24th March 2026
The Future Homes Standard has just been announced.
Meaning every new home from 2028 will need to be built with:
- Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)
- A minimum level of on-roof solar PV
This is a fantastic step towards decarbonising the UK's housing stock, and we're keen to make sure the transition is great for the planet, its people and their pockets.
Are you a housebuilder or housing association? Here's everything you need to know - and how Octopus Energy Homes can help you get ahead of it.
More homes will soon be eligible for Zero Bills and Tenant Power
The Future Homes Standard (FHS) will mean that you'll be building to around 75% of the Zero Bills standard already. By adding some more solar and a battery, your homes could soon be ready to join in.

What is Octopus Zero Bills?
Zero Bills is our flagship product for new build homes - and exactly what it sounds like. Customers who move into a Zero Bills home pay absolutely nothing on their energy bills, guaranteed, for at least 5 years.
The FHS means you're already most of the way there. A little more solar and a battery, and your homes could qualify.
What's changed in the last decade?
- Solar panel efficiency has nearly doubled
- The cost of panels has fallen by around 80%
- The FHS has raised the base spec needed for new homes, ramping-up the move to low-energy, all-electric solutions
That means for a typical 90m² home, the net additional material costs of the solar and battery required for Zero Bills homes can now be as little as £4,860.
Zero Bills is available today, and already giving incredible savings to customers across the country. Ready to join them?
The Octopus Energy Homes team is building a range of smart energy solutions designed to give your business the edge in new builds:
