Congratulations Kester for winning February's Arsenal prize draw!
Kester is now the proud owner of a signed Arsenal shirt that includes signatures of the first team squad – simply by going green with our Arsenal plan.
We had coffee with Kester to chat about his love for Arsenal, and why he chose Octopus Energy to go green...
How long have you supported Arsenal for?
I’ve been supporting Arsenal my whole life. Ever since I was 4 years old, when I went down to Highbury for my first game. I've been hooked ever since. My family has supported Arsenal for decades, since way back in the seventies, so it’s been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
How did you hear about our partnership with Arsenal?
I wanted to move energy providers, and I was on a comparison site looking for a green energy plan when I stumbled upon Octopus Energy. I think you were the cheapest or second cheapest, I'm not sure. After a bit of research, I noticed on the Arsenal website that you guys had signed a deal to give fans their own energy plan, so I signed up.
How often do you switch normally?
I used to switch every year. I'd come out of a fixed deal and then compare what's available online. I don’t always go for cheapest, sometimes it’s about brand value. In the past I’d go for an established brand, but in this case I was going for green energy. The Arsenal partnership was great as it meant I could support the club, and also be entered into the monthly prize draws.
How did you find the switching process?
This time it was really easy. My previous experience switching from British Gas to EDF was quite difficult. British Gas didn't close my account properly and there were loads of delays. I wasn’t financially affected, but it was a lot of hassle.
This time was swift and really simple. I also liked the communication – you kept me updated the whole time. I especially like the way you write "FYI" or "Action" in the subject line – it means I don’t have to read a bunch of text to find out what I need to do. It’s really helpful.
Why were you looking for a green plan?
I like to think I’ve got quite green credentials. I use renewable energy, do recycling etc., so I place more emphasis on that than how much something costs. I plan to have kids at some point and obviously their future is important to me.
How much did you save?
Even though I'm on a green energy plan, I saved at least £200 on what I was paying before. I think there’s a lot of apathy about green energy – people think that it’s a hassle to switch, or that renewable energy is more expensive, but actually it’s really affordable and easy to do.
