Maghull Cricket Club has a dream new batting partnership: green tech and a smart business tariffs.
Their low-carbon tech means they need to get less power from the grid. And when they do, they can use it at different times of day. Their smart tariff, Shape Shifters: Agile, gives them cheaper electricity nearly all day.
Together, the club say these changes have lowered their energy bills by 65%.

Maghull Cricket Club’s heritage dates back to 1926, when they formed their first friendly team. Since the 1970s, they’ve been playing in amateur leagues across Liverpool.
But they’re not just about chasing runs and trophies. They’ve built a reputation as a community-first club. From nine-year-olds taking their first guard to veterans chasing centuries, anyone can walk to the crease.
Like many small charities, every penny has to go a long way at the club. So, Maghull is finding smarter ways to keep the game alive for the community.

Meet Derek, the groundsman
Derek was kind enough to open Maghull CC’s doors for us.
He’s been at the club for 20 years, as he believes in the positive impact it has on the community.
I love the club. After I retired, I wanted to stay busy and help out the community. Volunteering here lets me stay in touch with people and catch the games too."
He explained how running a cricket club can be expensive. The equipment alone costs thousands of pounds.
Then there's all the administrative and operational costs, too. Like energy bills.

Agile can work for many different organisation types. But one thing that makes Maghull particularly suitable is their green tech.
By pairing the time-of-use tariff with their groovy gadgets, they're hitting their bills past the boundary. They told us their energy costs are now 65% lower, thanks to this cracking combination.

Solar panels
These generate renewable power on-site. That means they take less electricity from the grid.
Battery storage
The club can draw power from the grid when prices are low. Rather than using it right away, they store it in their batteries. They can then use that energy when rates are higher, meaning they avoid peak prices.
EV chargers
Members and visitors can charge their electric cars at times when Agile prices are lower.
An air source heat pump
This heats and cools the clubhouse. The club can programme it to turn on when electricity prices are lower.
