Important: Agile pricing during an energy crisis 👇

Octopus are famous for leading the way with our innovative collection of beta smart tariffs, helping bring cheaper and greener power to all our customers.

We won't ever divert from our mission, but due to continued market volatility and the beta nature of this smart tariff we may need to restrict daily sign ups. You're still free to sign up below, and we'll let you know if this affects you joining Agile.

In Winter '22-'23, a typical household on Agile paid around 35p/kWh on average (a little more than the average variable tariff).

Agile prices can spike up to 100p/kWh any time – that's three times higher than most customers are paying right now.

This tariff is best suited to customers who can shift large amounts of their energy use to avoid these expensive peaks, often by using smart home technologies like solar and batteries.

Perfect for electric vehicles, storage heaters, or anyone who can shift their electricity use outside of peak times.

What does it cost?

Prices based on the wholesale price of energy

With Agile Octopus, you get access to half-hourly energy prices, tied to wholesale prices and updated daily. So when wholesale electricity prices drop, your bills can too – particularly if you can shift your daily electricity use outside of peak times.

The UK's first ever ‘Plunge Pricing’

Across the UK, whenever more electricity is generated than consumed, energy prices fall – very occasionally, to the point where prices drop below zero.

Agile Octopus introduces Plunge Pricing – a world first that lets you take advantage of these negative price events, and get paid for the electricity you use. You'll receive alerts whenever prices drop below zero, and you can use our Agile API to program your smart devices.

Price Cap Protect means your prices won't go above 100p/kWh

When more electricity is being used than generated, wholesale prices rise. Price spikes can be short-lived, but they do happen. Agile Octopus includes Price Cap Protect, which ensures you'll never pay more than 100p / kWh for your electricity (this is around 3x higher than the average UK energy tariff in 2023).

With Agile Octopus, you're driving the transition to smarter, greener energy

Agile's prices are often cheaper when the energy in the grid is greener, and more expensive when energy's dirtier (usually between 4-7pm, when the UK's fossil fuel generating stations have been turned on to meet high demand).

When Agile Octopus customers shift their energy usage to access the cheapest rates, they reduce the need to burn as many fossil fuels during ‘peak times’, and help us get the most out of green energy when it's abundant. This way, Agile rewards you for helping drive the green energy revolution — making a 100% renewable energy system possible on a massive scale.

Want to join Agile Octopus?

You'll need to:

  1. Be an Octopus Energy customer

If you're not with us yet, sign up below and you'll join us on one of our standard tariffs initially while we connect all the dots behind the scenes.

  2. Have a smart meter we can connect to

We can connect to second generation (SMETS2) meters, and some types of first generation (SMETS1) smart meters. How do I know what type I have?

If you have a compatible smart meter already, you're all set. If you don't have a smart meter yet, or you have a different type of smart meter, you can still start the switch to Agile Octopus below, but you'll need to stay on one of our standard tariffs while we get you Agile Octopus-ready.

In some cases, this could take weeks, or might not be possible at all if your home isn't suitable for a smart meter — but you're able to switch away any time with no exit fees. Read more on this.

Before signing up, please read this quick guide covering:
    • How to know whether you're eligible for a smart meter
    • What to do if you have the wrong type of meter
    • Why we can't always install your meter right away
    • How long it takes to get your smart meter connected
    • Our Covid-safe installations policy
  3. Hang tight while we connect to your smart meter

It generally takes us around 14 days to connect to a smart meter so we can read it remotely – whether it's one we've just installed, or one we're taking over after you switch to us.
    Read more on this.

  4. Accept our Terms & Conditions via email

Once we're connected and getting half–hourly readings from your smart meter, we'll send you an email asking you to accept the Terms & Conditions of Agile Octopus to complete your switch.
Have a read of our smart tariff Terms & Conditions now.

    Once you've confirmed via email,

  5. You're good to go!

Your tariff will change automatically to Agile Octopus. You should see the change straight away on your online account.

Agile Octopus is a product of our labs, available now to customers through our beta programme.

You'll need a SMETS2 smart meter, or a “Secure” branded SMETS1 meter, that we can receive half-hourly consumption data from.

Don't have a suitable smart meter?

Start your switch below to register your interest for a smart meter. The smart meter installation comes at no extra cost.

Once you've registered your interest, our team will be in contact when we have an appointment in your area.

If you're cool with this, and you'd still like to work with us to make world-changing energy tariffs a reality, check this box so we know you're on board. You will always be able to switch to one of our fairly priced standard tariffs at any time.

Due to continued market volatility and the beta nature of this smart tariff we may need to restrict daily sign ups. You're still free to sign up below, and we'll let you know if this ever affects you.

Agile Octopus is a cutting edge innovation created by Octopus's unique technology. Unlike products available from other companies, it relies on a smart meter system (which as our Founder Greg explains here, is not always fully reliable). Some customers have experienced delays. However, of the thousands of customers on these smart tariffs, the vast majority are now experiencing smooth service.
