How do the sessions work?
When we see that there's extra clean electricity on the grid, we'll tell your battery to charge up. At busy times, when fossil fuels are high, your battery will discharge to help support the grid.
Outside of sessions, nothing changes. Your battery goes right back to optimising for your standard tariff schedule, same as usual. And your export payments carry on as normal, with the Charge Pack payments added on top.
How many sessions can I expect? Will you let me know in advance?
There'll be around 2 sessions per week, and we'll give you up to 24 hours' notice beforehand.
Prepping for sessions
To prepare for a session, we sometimes need to charge or discharge your battery in advance – since we can't charge if it's full, or discharge if it's empty.
If any pre-charging happens, we'll credit you so the charging matches your cheap off-peak rate. And if we discharge ahead of time, we'll pay you the difference between your day import rate and export rate, plus an extra bonus.
Why add Charge Pack to your tariff?
Guaranteed earnings: You'll get at least £12 each month just for taking part. It's added directly to your Octopus account.
It's automatic: You don't need to do anything – you'll keep the exact same energy tariff with no changes to your daily routine.
Smart compensation: If any sessions require us to charge from the grid, we'll credit you so it effectively costs your cheaper off-peak rate. If you export, we'll credit you the difference, too.

Compatible Import and Export Tariff
You need to be on Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Go, Flexible or a Fixed tariff for your import, and on Outgoing Octopus for your export.

The batteries we currently support are AlphaESS, EcoFlow, Enphase, FoxESS, GivEnergy, HanchuESS, Huawei, Sigenergy and SolarEdge.
