How it works:

Energy assessior visit

1. Have an assessor visit your home

For your survey, one of our energy experts will visit your home for about two hours to:

  • Inspect your insulation
  • See if you could install amazing green tech like solar panels or a heat pump
  • Assess your ventilation
  • Check where you might be losing heat

2. Receive your bespoke Cosy Homes Plan

Based on your home, budget and priorities, your plan will include:

  • A comprehensive energy efficiency report, covering everything from issues that affect your home's energy performance to suitable solutions and next steps.
  • A 3 point plan with recommendations tailored to your objectives and budget, broken down into three packages. This gives you manageable options to choose from, with estimated costs and payback periods clearly set out.

Frequently asked questions

Which homes are suitable for a Cosy Homes survey?

×

To be eligible for a survey, you need to own the property or have consent from the owner for us to carry out the survey. If you own but don’t live in the house, please make sure that the tenants are comfortable with us doing the survey before booking with us. Sadly the service isn’t available for flats at the moment, so the property must be a house.

What's the process for getting my Cosy Home plan?

×

The service offers advice on how to upgrade your home. Octopus may also be able to install some of the upgrades for you and if we can’t install ourselves, we’ll try and recommend trusted installers who can.

Step 1 - Home survey and energy plan. One of our energy experts will visit your home for a comprehensive assessment. They will spend about two hours inspecting your home.

They’ll ask about your goals, how you heat your home, and any current issues. And they will measure your rooms, walls, windows, and radiators, check your loft insulation and heating system, and look at the potential to install solar panels, batteries, or heat pumps.

Next, our retrofit specialists at Kuppa will analyse all the data, and we’ll provide you with a home energy plan that explains how efficient your home is. It will highlight the best options for improving energy efficiency and installing clean, green technologies in your home, based on your goals and budget.

From draft proofing to insulation, heat pumps, solar panels, and batteries—there are plenty of options to choose from. Our cutting-edge tools ensure you're getting clear, reliable advice that works to the highest consumer standards.

Step 2 - Discussion with one of our energy experts. You can review your plan with one of our experts to help you understand your options.

Step 3 - Upgrading your home. Our team might be able to handle some of the improvements for you, hassle-free. If we’re unable to, we can connect you with trusted professionals. There’s no obligation to use Cosy Homes—your plan can be used by other installers or builders too.

Further detail on what to expect in your Cosy Homes plan

×

We’ll provide recommendations tailored to your goals and budget, with three packages of measures:

  • Cosy Home: Focuses on solutions that fit your current budget and address your priorities, whether it’s saving on bills, cutting carbon, or improving comfort.
  • Clean Tech Home: Recommendations for low-carbon technologies to power your home with clean, green energy while saving on bills.
  • Whole Home: Focuses on bigger insulation upgrades for maximum comfort—making your home cosier in winter and cooler in summer. These improvements typically have longer payback periods.

We’ll also provide fact sheets for each measure, detailing what it is, why it’s recommended, cost estimates, and potential savings. We’ll also let you know if any prep work, like fixing damp or further surveys, is needed beforehand.

If Octopus Energy can handle the installation, we’ll provide a preliminary quote and advise on any grant funding you may be eligible for. If we can’t serve your home, we’ll gladly connect you with trusted professionals.

The plan also includes advice on ventilation improvements and tips for quick wins, like adjusting your boiler’s flow temperature or upgrading to energy-efficient lighting.

What doesn’t the Cosy Home plan cover?

×

The energy expert won’t remove flooring or walls, so we won’t be able to inspect elements of insulation that are hidden in your walls, or the condition of structural elements of your home like floor joists.

While we will let you know about any visible damp, ventilation or structural issues that we come across during the survey, we are not professional structural surveyors, so you would need to get follow-up advice from a professionally qualified building surveyor to understand the extent of and how best to fix these issues.

How long does the process take?

×

Depending on your availability, and assuming you are keen for us to carry out the survey as soon as possible, we’ll aim to visit your house within 10 days of booking and you’ll then receive your plan within two weeks. After you receive your Cosy Homes plan, the time to make improvements depends on what you would like to do, and we can discuss that with you if you want to go ahead.

What types of home improvements are covered in the Cosy Homes plan?

×

The plan will include information on measures that are relevant to your home from the list below:

  • Insulation upgrades (loft, cavity, solid wall, and underfloor insulation)
  • Solar panels and heat pumps
  • Double or triple-glazed windows
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Smart home energy systems
  • Good ventilation

Can Octopus Energy carry out the upgrades?

×

Yes we can instal heat pumps, solar & battery power, EV chargers and insulation in most homes. If we can’t serve your home just yet, we’ll connect you with trusted installers who can get the job done.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

×

Once the Cosy Home plan has been completed we will not be able to refund you for the cost of the survey, so please be sure you want the survey completed if you tell us to go ahead as soon as possible after booking.

Are there government grants/subsidies available, or finance options?

×

Yes, there are several grants and incentives available, such as the Government’s Great British Insulation Scheme, offering up to £1,500 off insulation for homeowners with an EPC rating of D or lower and council tax band of A-D. Our team will help you find out what you're eligible for.

We currently offer finance for solar and battery installations.

Is this service available nationwide?

×

At the moment, we’re piloting the service in Leeds in collaboration with Leeds Local Authority.

Will any retrofit work disrupt my daily life?

×

The plan will outline the process for different measures. If you choose to book Octopus Energy to do the work, our team will work with you to ensure the process is as smooth as possible. The time it takes to do the work will depend on what you want to do - e.g. a heat pump installation could take around 4 days, whereas room in roof insulation could take 1-2 weeks.
