Here's how Shape Shifters: Export works

It's just like Outgoing Octopus Agile, but for businesses.

Your export prices change every half-hour, in line with wholesale energy costs. You can always see your prices for the day ahead. So, you can plan to sell electricity when costs are high.

It's ideal for businesses with battery storage. You can:

  • charge your batteries up when prices are down (this bit works best if you have Shape Shifters for import too)
  • or power them up for free with solar panels, if you've got them
  • sell that stored-up energy when prices reach their evening peak

Panel Power is made for businesses like yours. You get a simple flat rate of 8p, all day. So you can profit on your power, no matter what time you produce it.

I have solar panels and battery storage

Shape Shifters: Export is the one for you. You can store up your power until the prices peak. Then, sell them at highest rate.

I don't have either

These tariffs are for customers who can generate or sell their energy. But don't worry - we've got plenty more smart products you can enjoy.

How long will my application take?

Applications to Shape Shifters: Export can take up to 10 weeks to process. When that's done, you can start exporting and earning.

Does this tariff work with the import versions of Shape Shifters?

Yes! They go together very nicely indeed.

You can choose from 2 versions of Shape Shifters for your incoming supply - Agile and Trio. They both give you cheaper electricity nearly all day. And they reward you for using energy outside of the 4-7pm peak.

Here's why they work so well with Shape Shifters: Export. You can charge up your batteries overnight when prices are really low. Then, use that cheaper energy throughout the day. When it comes to the 4-7pm peak prices, you can offload any leftover power at a higher price than you paid for it.

Can I join if I don't have battery storage?

Yes - you're still welcome to join.

You don't have to have batteries to join Shape Shifters: Export. But, we expect with businesses with batteries to benefit the most.

It's worth checking out Panel Power too. Your exports earn a simple flat rate of 8p per unit, all day. So you can profit on your power, no matter what time you produce it.

How do you calculate Shape Shifters: Export prices?

You get a different price every half-hour. We calculate them using day-ahead wholesale energy rates, combined with region-specific charges for using the grid to transport power.

The formula is:

APX * M + B + C

Where:

  1. APX is the wholesale price of energy during that half-hour window. It refers to the APX day-ahead 30-minute wholesale price, converted to p/kWh.
  2. M is a multiplier to account for things like power lost during transmissions, imbalances in the grid, and trading charges.
  3. B covers grid charges that aren't specific to the time of day. This includes Balancing Services Use of System (BSUoS) and Generator Distribution Use of System (GDUoS).
  4. C is for grid charges that are specific to the time of day, like Transmission Network Use Of System (TNUoS). C only applies during the 4-7pm peak.

There are no limits to how high or low the prices can go.

Is this the same as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

No, Shape Shifters: Export is a different tariff.

We offer the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme too. But the prices you'll receive for your energy will be higher with Shape Shifters.
