Frequently asked questions
If your question isn't answered here, check out our full FAQ page for more.
'Tethered' means there is a cable permanently attached to the charging box at one end.
'Untethered' means that a cable plugs into your car at one end and the box at the other. So you'll be able to source your own cable to charge your EV. For example, the one that was delivered with your EV.
Your cable will need to be long enough to comfortably reach your EV from your chargepoint. Depending on the brand you chose, the cables of our tethered EV chargers are between 5 and 8 metres long. Generally, this is enough for most houses where the box is on the outside of the house and the car is parked on a driveway.
A standard installation is included in the price of your charger. But if the installation is more complex and our engineers will need to spend more time at your home, it'll cost a bit more.
Our EV chargepoint installations are grouped into three categories. See the table below for what's included in each installation package:
| Services included | Standard | Standard Plus | Enhanced | Bespoke |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cable length | Up to 10m | Up to 20m | Up to 30m | 30m+ |
| All electrical components and connections | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Mounting the charger to a brick or plaster | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Clipping cables to a wall or along window/door frames | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Electrical testing | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Additional cost | £0.00 | £125.00 | £250.00 | £350.00 |
We can only install a charger if you have private parking (like in a driveway or garage, with no public lands between your house and the charger). If the cable will need to cross public lands, we recommend that you look at a solution like Kerbo Charge.
An EV charged on Intelligent Octopus Go could save you £100s on your fuel costs vs a petrol car.

Save up to 85% vs public charging when you power up at home with Intelligent Octopus Go.
A slow or fast charge (<50 kWh) with one of the UK's public charging points costs an EV driver 54p/kWh on average (last checked June 2026). With Intelligent Octopus Go, you smart charge for only 8p/kWh and save 85%.
1 - 8/54 = 0.85 or 85%
Charge for up to 69% less than average price cap rates.
With Intelligent Octopus Go, you can smart charge eligible cars from only 8p/kWh. The average electricity unit rate of a standard variable tariff, based on the July 2026 Ofgem energy price cap for customers paying by direct debit, is 26.11p/kWh. This represents a saving of 69% compared to the average price cap unit rate (1- 8/26.11 = 0.69 or 69%).
Please note that savings apply to unit rates only and exclude standing charges. Standard variable rates vary by region, so your actual percentage saving may vary depending on where you live. Check the price cap for your region here.
The UK's most popular EV tariff
In their latest State of the market report, Ofgem shared that 653k domestic customers were on a Smart Time of Use EV tariff in July 2025. More than half were with Octopus, and the majority of them charged with Intelligent Octopus Go.
Last year, our customers typically saved £771 compared to our standard tariff
Over the last year (May 2025 to April 2026), customers on our fixed Intelligent Octopus Go tariff typically saved £771 compared to our standard variable tariff, Flexible Octopus. Calculations are based on comparing actual half-hourly consumption and costs on Intelligent Octopus Go against the costs the customer would have incurred for that same consumption on our Flexible Octopus tariff.
Savings for individual homes vary based on how much electricity you use for your house and EV, and how much you shift towards off-peak hours. Get a quote to compare your rates.
