Chatting with Jerome Foster II: An Evening to Remember

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting Jerome Foster II in our office for a fireside chat, and it was incredible. Jerome is a climate activist, the youngest White House Advisor in U.S. history, and a leading voice for marginalised communities in the climate movement.

Samsam, writer and Octopus Energy Equality Foundation manager, sat down for a fireside chat with Jerome in our busy London HQ. Watch it below.

We talked about his journey from organising climate strikes to advising at the highest levels of government, the role of young people in driving change, and why it’s crucial to bring marginalised communities into climate conversations—especially when it comes to shifting the narrative beyond the Global North.

Career advice from Jerome

Take full advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Follow your passions, be tenacious, and don't let a fear of failure or judgement hold you back. Do what you believe in, and your actions will inspire others to do the same.

Jerome

Jerome shared tons of advice for staying hopeful and making a difference in the face of big challenges. It was inspiring, insightful, and full of optimism for the future.

Hope comes from action. From seeing the world shift in ways that fit our shared values. And from organisations like Octopus, prioritising people over profits.

Reclaiming the narrative

When we think of people in politics, we often think of stuffy old men, in grey suits. It's less common to see young people of colour taking up space and telling their own stories. That's why people like Jerome are so important. So, they can speak up and advocate for others based on their own experiences and add colour to the world of decision-makers representing our society.

Hosting Jerome was a joy. His story and energy reminded us all of the power of young people to lead, inspire, and rewrite the rules.

The Octopus Energy Equality Foundation

We brought this event to life, as part of our Octopus Energy Equality Foundation work, our standalone charity that focuses on empowering young Black and ethnic minority individuals to thrive in green energy and tech. We do this by working with young people of all ages, and giving them access to opportunities in the world of work, through workshops, careers events and much more.

Our work is all about breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and supporting grassroots organisations doing important work in anti-racism and sustainability.
