What is an MPAN?

Your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is the unique "address" for your electricity supply. It tells the energy network exactly where the power is flowing.

There are two types:

  • import MPAN, for the energy you buy from the grid

  • Export MPAN, for energy you sell back to the grid, for example if you have solar panels.

Where to find it

You will find your MPAN on your electricity bill or your online account.

  • On most suppliers’ bills: Look for a grid of small boxes starting with a large 'S', usually on the first or second page.

  • On an Octopus bill: We keep it in the electricity breakdown section, usually on page 2 or 3 of your PDF statement. Look for the 'S' grid, labeled as your Supply Number.

  • On your Octopus online dashboard. Scroll down to the “Electricity” section; your 13-digit MPAN is listed on the right.

Note for solar users: If you already have an export tariff set up, you will see a second “Electricity” section on your dashboard labelled with your export tariff name. Your Export MPAN is listed there.

Which numbers do you actually need?

  • 13 vs 21 digits: The full grid contains 21 characters. The top row just gives the network technical details about your meter setup. The bottom 13 digits are the core unique ID for your home. Most online forms only ask for these bottom 13 digits, though occasionally an installer might need the full 21.

  • Not your meter serial number: A really common mix-up! Don't confuse your MPAN with the barcode number printed on your physical meter. The serial number identifies the plastic box; the MPAN identifies your actual electricity supply.

Why would I need it?

When you switch to a modern energy supplier or set up a new tariff, the systems usually just look up your address and find your MPAN automatically in the background. However, you may need it if:

  • You live in a new build or have a "tricky" address.

  • You’re hiring an independent installer, for example to install an EV charger.

  • You are setting up an export tariff to get paid for your solar energy. Find out more here
