How do I get an export MPAN?

If you’ve recently installed solar panels or a home battery, you’re probably itching to start selling your excess energy back to the grid. We can't wait to get you earning, but you need an export MPAN first.

Unlike your standard import MPAN, an export MPAN isn't automatically assigned to your house — it is created specifically for your generating equipment. Here's how to get one:

1. Get your paperwork in order

Once your installation is complete, your installer must provide you with two vital documents:

  • MCS Certificate: This proves your system was installed to national standards.

  • DNO confirmation: This is a letter or email from your local Distribution Network Operator (the people who own the wires in your area) confirming they have been notified of your system.

2. Apply for an export tariff

Choose an export tariff (like Outgoing Octopus). You’ll need to fill out an application form and upload the documents from Step 1.

3. We request your MPAN

Once we have your application, we contact the DNO on your behalf to request a new, unique export MPAN for your property.

4. The DNO creates your export MPAN

This is the longest part of the application process (it usually takes between one and four weeks) and is out of our control as it depends how busy they are (a bit like applying for a passport). Once the MPAN is created, Octopus can begin the enrolment on to Octopus' supply

5. Quids in

Once we're connected to your meter we will start pulling your export consumption and you can begin enjoying your earnings without lifting a finger.
