Want to join Cosy Octopus?

You'll need to:

  • 1

    Be an Octopus Energy customer

If you're not with us yet, sign up and you'll join us on one of our standard tariffs initially while we connect all the dots behind the scenes.

  • 2

Have a smart meter we can connect to

If you're a customer of ours already, check what type of meter you have on your online account under 'meters'.

We can connect to second generation (SMETS2) meters, and some types of first generation (SMETS1) smart meters.

If you're not a customer of ours yet, contact your current supplier to find out what meters you have. Don't forget – you need either a second generation SMETS2, or a SMETS1 made by Secure™, to be able to join a smart tariff. What if my meter is a SMETS1 that's been remotely upgraded by my supplier?

If your meter has a Secure logo on the front, we should be able to connect to it – this is a Secure™ SMETS1 meter.

  • 3

Hang tight while we connect to your smart meter

It generally takes us around 14 days to connect to a smart meter so we can read it remotely – whether it's one we've just installed, or one we're taking over after you switch to us. Read more on this.

  • 4

Accept our Terms & Conditions via email

Once we're connected and getting half–hourly readings from your smart meter, we'll send you an email asking you to accept the Terms & Conditions of Cosy Octopus to complete your switch. Have a read of our smart tariff Terms & Conditions now.

    You're all good

Your tariff will change automatically to Cosy Octopus. You should see the change straight away on your online account.

    Need some extra detail?

You could save £241 on your electricity bill if you run a typical heat pump (300% SCOP) on the Cosy Octopus tariff vs a standard variable tariff. Electricity consumption behaviour is based on Cosy Octopus customers over the previous year and assumes a total consumption of 5,877 kWh (2,700 kWh for your home and 3,177 kWh for heating).

Yes, Cosy is a flexible (aka variable) tariff. This means the price - the unit rates and standing charge - of the tariff can rise and fall with wholesale energy prices.

We'll always give reasonable notice of any changes to the pricing of flexible tariffs. When the price of our flexible tariff changes, the price of your Cosy tariff will also change (as Cosy rates are calculated as a percentage of the flexible rate in your area).

There's no exit fees or tie-ins, so if Cosy Octopus doesn't work for you, you're free to switch tariffs or change suppliers with no penalties at any time.

Remember: your monthly payment isn't fixed. We only recommend changing your Direct Debit if your usage is greatly above - or below - your monthly payments.

No, Cosy Octopus is an electricity only tariff, and takes advantage of the variability of electricity wholesale prices throughout the day.

Yes, all of our innovative tariffs rely on smart meter tech. We also need to be able to link to your smart meter, so we can get at the data. This means you'll need to:

    1. Be supplied by Octopus.

    2. Have a SMETS2, or Secure SMETS1 smart meter we can take half hourly readings from.

Not with us yet? Join Octopus Energy through our Cosy Octopus sign-up page, and we'll put you on an interim tariff until you've switched and had your smart meter installed / working on our systems.

Industry rules mean we can't replace a meter we don't supply. It's the same story getting the data from your meter; you need to be an Octopus customer. This means we don't know for sure that your account / meter will work with this tariff until we have you on supply with Octopus.

If you don't have a smart meter, we'll contact you to book an installation once your account has switched to us.

Number one and most important: no matter what your In-Home Display (IHD) - the little portable screen you get with smart meters - says, your triple dip super cheap periods stay between 04:00 - 07:00, 13:00 - 16:00, and 22:00 - 00:00 while your peak period stays between 16:00 - 19:00.

Customers on our other smart tariffs sometimes see their in-home display (IHD) showing the off-peak rate kicking in at 01:30am, or their peak rate starting at 17.00pm. This is because IHDs aren't very good at accounting for daylight saving times.

You should trust what we put on your bills. The IHD isn't really determining anything on your meter or tariff, rather just showing some information that might not be correct. Ultimately, our system is set up to account for changes due to daylight savings, so please don't worry: your bills and charges will be correct!

As an alternative, you can use the Octopus mobile app instead and be assured that you are seeing the correct information at all times.

If you have a heat pump (air or ground source), an electric boiler or electric radiators at your property, you can join Cosy Octopus. If you have another system in your property, get in touch and we'll let you know if you're eligible for the tariff.
