How does Free Electricity work?

  1. Join Octoplus then sign up to Free Electricity and we’ll email you about any upcoming Free Electricity times.
  2. The day before the Free Electricity session, we’ll email you to let you know what time it’ll happen: generally an hour-long slot in the afternoon.
  3. When the time comes, use more electricity to maximise the freeness: do the vacuuming, turn the dishwasher or washing machine on, make lunch (or an early dinner), run your heat pump or immersion heater, you name it!
  4. The power you'd normally use will cost the same and your standing charge will be charged as normal. Any extra power you use will be totally free.

What happens after a Free Electricity session?

  • Within two weeks of the session, you'll be able to see how much extra power you used compared to normal, and we’ll pay you that amount into your account as a bill credit.

Who is eligible for Free Electricity?

You can join if you’re an Octopus Energy customer and signed up to Octoplus, our rewards scheme (you can check if you've signed up in your online dashboard or app).

You can join Octoplus as long as you have a smart meter and pay by Direct Debit or smart prepay. It’s free and you can sign up online in moments.

How do you work out what I normally use?

We'll look at your historical smart meter readings to work out your typical energy use at that time of day.
If the Session is on a weekday, we'll look at your half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays. If the Session is at the weekend, we'll look at your half-hourly usage at that time within the last 4 weekend days. We'll not include days where a Session took place in these calculations.

For Intelligent Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Flux customers, we'll exclude your device's power from your baseline (so any EV charging or battery import/export won't be included).

Once we've calculated this ‘normal’ figure, we can use it as a baseline - any power you use above that baseline will be free.

For example, if you normally use 100kWh between 1-2pm, anything over 100kWh will be free.

How does free electricity work with Intelligent Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Flux?

During the session, FILL YOUR BOOTS: all the electricity you use above your normal household consumption will be free – excluding any power from your Intelligent device.

You can also get an hour's free charging for your Intelligent device. Here's how:

  • Plug in: make sure your car or battery is plugged in throughout the session, then let your Intelligent schedule do its thing (no boost charging!)
  • Your device might not charge during the session, but as long as you’ve plugged in, you’ll bag an hours’ free charging credit!
  • Don't boost charge or interfere with the smart schedule in our app. Our schedule will charge you at the best times to help the grid, so we want you to stick with that! Any non-scheduled device charging will be charged as normal.
  • If you can't plug in during the session, you'll miss out on the hour's free charging credit but you'll still get any household usage free above your normal use.
  • In the double session, you'll get two hours' free charging instead of one if you plug in throughout.

How do you work out how much free electricity I used?

We first work out what you'd normally used at that time, then, we look at your smart meter readings from the time of the session.

We then calculate the cost of all the power you used above normal based on your electricity unit rate at the time, and credit your Octopus account by that amount.

Your standing charge will be charged to you as normal.

What if you don't get my smart meter readings?

Occasionally there’s a glitch in the matrix, and we don’t receive your electricity meter readings. If that happens, we’ll credit you the average amount of Free Electricity used by customers in that session.
