The little gadget powering a smarter energy future: The Octopus Home Mini

It started as a simple idea: what if a tiny device could unlock the secrets of your home’s energy use, and help you take control of it, effortlessly? Fast forward two years, and the Octopus Home Mini is quietly revolutionising how over 200,000 homes across the UK use electricity.

It’s sustainable, smart, and totally free for Octopus customers—and it’s proving that sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from the tiniest tech.

When I sat down with Derya, our brilliant Lead Product Engineer here at Octopus Energy, I was expecting to hear some impressive stuff about the Octopus Home Mini. But I was surprised to hear just how fast it’s taken off and exactly how much people genuinely love this tiny, free bit of tech that’s quietly transforming homes across the UK.

We’re now sending out 25,000 Home Minis a month, “Since we ramped things up properly in February 2024, the growth has been incredible. And the feedback from customers? Just fantastic.

Octopus Home Mini 2

Launched just 2 years ago, the Home Mini is a small device with a big mission: to give people easy access to their real-time energy data and help them take control of how and when they use electricity. It connects directly to your smart meter and, through the Octopus app, gives you a clear, up-to-the-minute view of how much energy your home is using (and which gadgets are guzzling the most).

It’s now in over 200,000 homes. And customers are loving it.

People keep telling us how easy it is to set up. They just plug it in, follow a few steps on the app, and they’re good to go. We’ve had some customers say it’s the quickest bit of tech they’ve ever set up.

It’s Free. It’s Smart. It’s Making a Difference.

One of the most exciting things about the Home Mini is that it’s completely free for Octopus customers. Not only that, it’s built in a smarter, more sustainable way than traditional energy displays, made entirely by recycled ocean plastics.

And while some customers use it just to keep an eye on their bills, others are becoming full-on energy detectives. Even saving money once they realise which guilty devices are using the most energy in their homes.

Another incredible win? It helps improve smart meter connections—especially for homes where the gas meter has trouble communicating with the main hub. The Mini acts a bit like a range extender, making sure your meters talk to each other and the data keeps flowing.

Always Improving

Since its launch, Derya and her team have been constantly refining the Mini—making the design sleeker, the software smarter, and adding new functionality. There are more improvements in the pipeline, too. The team is exploring ways to make the Home Mini integrate with other smart home tech, and building features to support the UK's growing need for energy flexibility.

The mission has always been to empower customers with data. We wanted people to be able to see how energy is used in their home, and with the Mini they can make the most of the power at their fingertips.

What’s Next? A Whole Ecosystem of Green Tech

The Home Mini is just the beginning. Derya’s team is also developing other planet-friendly tech that slots seamlessly into your home life. Think smarter charging, next-gen thermostats, and heat pumps designed to keep your home toasty for less.

In fact, the full Cosy range of heat pumps have been making waves. The newest models are more efficient, user-friendly, and flexible than ever, and all designed right here in the UK.

We’ve got some very tech-savvy customers using our heat pumps and products. They’re adjusting settings based on weather conditions and optimising their home heating for both comfort and efficiency. We’ve built the tools to make that kind of smart control really easy.

Whether you’re saving money, going green, or just curious about how energy flows through your home, the Octopus Home Mini is quietly becoming one of the most powerful tools in our customers' homes. And with Derya and her team behind the wheel, it’s only going to get better.
