Introducing Tenant Power: our new tariff for social housing tenants

We’ve launched a ground-breaking new tariff that could cut electricity bills for social housing tenants by £200 a year* on average, while also helping landlords upgrade more homes with clean energy tech.

Tenant Power is designed for social housing with solar panels and a battery. By offering a special discounted bill, it gives tenants cheaper electricity by harnessing rays on the roof, and benefits landlords too. It also allows landlords to generate their own pot of funding to install solar and batteries in more homes faster, helping more tenants save on their bills.

It’s a simple idea with a big impact. Big savings for tenants. A clear return for social housing landlords. And a cleaner, fairer energy system for everyone.

Sharing the benefits of green energy fairly

Right now, social housing tenants can't always benefit from all the ways new energy tech can slash your bills. That's because energy set-ups are often controlled by social housing landlords like housing associations, limiting tenants' ability to access cheaper rates or smart savings schemes. Even when solar panels and batteries have been installed, tenants haven't always seen notable savings on their bills, because there wasn't a tariff designed to pass those savings on.

In other cases, only the tenants benefit from any low carbon tech installed, leaving the landlords with nothing to show for their investment. This makes it difficult for landlords to justify investments in energy improvements that don't provide them with adequate returns.

Tenant Power changes that. With this tariff, tenants get a fixed unit rate discount on their electricity bills that acts as a buffer when energy prices rise. The discount is the same for all tenants with solar and batteries, so everyone benefits equally and your savings don't depend on which way your roof faces or how much sun it gets. And because the discount stays fixed throughout the year, tenants can count on lower bills even in winter when heating costs are higher. Meanwhile, landlords benefit from the discount and get paid when their properties export extra solar power, helping cover the cost of installing more green tech in more homes. It's a win-win!

It’s the first time a UK tariff has been designed to fairly share the benefits of renewable energy between landlords and tenants.

How it works:

Step 1: Landlord installs solar panels and a battery

Step 2: Tenant joins the Tenant Power tariff

Step 3: Tenant saves money immediately with a discounted electricity bill

Step 4: Monthly report of income is shared with the landlord to invoice against.

Simple!

Even more savings with smart green upgrades

Landlords can install solar panels, Octopus-optimised batteries, and smart low carbon tech like heat pumps to help their tenants access even greater savings. Tenant Power works with just solar and batteries, but when a heat pump is also installed, average savings for tenants can rise to £432** a year.

We're inviting housing associations and local councils to bring this new tariff to their communities and help thousands of households access affordable, green energy.

Tenant Power is all about making clean energy work for everyone. Because the energy revolution should leave no one behind.

*For example, a 25% discount off SVT would save £200 annually (based on current price cap rates as of October 2025). The discount rate depends on the number of solar panels, battery size, and landlord's share, agreed case-by-case).
** This is based on the average UK home with solar, battery and heat pump replacing gas heating, and current Oct 2025 standard variable tariff rates.
