×

Write down the five numbers as they appear. Ignore the red one.

How to read if you have two energy rates for different times of day:

×

  2. Write down the five numbers as they appear, ignoring the red ones.

Digital dual meter (single display)

How to take your reading:

×
  1. Write down the numbers as they appear.
  2. Press the button to see the next reading, then write that down too.

Dial meter

Here you’ll see five dials, each with numbers 0 to 9. There may be a sixth dial on the right, sometimes in red, or with 1/10 next to it – ignore this.

An image of a dial meter with six dials labelled one to 9

How to take your reading:

×
  1. Write down the numbers the pointer has just passed, from left to right.
  2. If the pointer lies exactly on any number, underline it (in the above example, you would underline the 4).
  3. Now, look at your five numbers. For any that are underlined, look at the number following it – if it’s between 9 and 0, reduce your underlined number by one. The above example would therefore be 1 3 9 7 0.

Gas

Like electricity, there are a few different types of gas meter, but they’re all fairly simple to read.

Digital imperial meter

FAQs

Why do I need to give meter readings?

×

If you’ve got a traditional energy meter (not a smart one), you’ll need to send in regular meter readings so we can work out how much energy you’re using.

Smart meters remove the need for meter readings because they send readings to us automatically. Register your interest in a smart meter and we'll be in touch when engineers are available in your area.

That said, there are still a handful of situations where you might need to take a manual meter reading from your smart meter.

If you're on one of our export tariffs, you'll have to provide 'export readings' from your SMETS1 or SMETS2 meter (not your generation meter, or your In-Home Display) so we can calculate your export payments.

Electricity and gas meters come in several different shapes and sizes, so before we can tell you how to read your meter, it’s important to work out which type of meter you have.

When should I send a meter reading?

×

If you've got a traditional meter, or a smart meter that's in 'dumb' mode, we recommend sending in a reading every month – or if not, as often as you can.

If you have a smart meter that we're connected to, you don't need to worry about sending us readings as we can take these automatically.

When you give us meter readings, we can see how much energy you've really used, and base your bills on that instead of estimating how much you've used. As well as making your bills more accurate, regular meter readings give us a clear picture of your energy use over time, which makes our forecasts of your payments and energy costs much more accurate as well.

It's also a good idea - if you don't have a connected smart meter - to send us a meter reading when your tariff is changing. This ensures any usage you're billed for is completely accurate.

If you're a Flexible Octopus customer, you'll be notified ahead of time when your prices will change. If you want a completely accurate bill, you're best to submit a reading on - or close to - the date your prices change. For example, if your tariff is changing on April 2nd, submit a reading sometime on the 2nd.

However, if you aren't able to provide a reading: don't panic! No one will be massively disadvantaged if they can't send us one. Octopus will still need a reading for that date, but we'll estimate one from your last meter reading instead. This will probably only be a few units off what the actual reading is, if you were able to provide it.

I accidentally sent an incorrect reading, what should I do?

×

If you've accidentally submitted an incorrect reading, don't worry. Our verification system should catch it, but if not, get in touch with the correct reading and we'll update it for you.

My meter only has one reading, why are you asking me for two?

×

This likely means our system thinks you have an Economy 7 meter.

On Economy 7, you have a day price and a night price for your energy, instead of a flat price all the time. Economy 7 gives you access to cheaper electricity at night (via a cheaper night rate) and slightly pricier energy during the day (via a more expensive day rate). Sometimes you have to press a button on your meter to show your second (nighttime) reading.

If an Economy 7 setup doesn’t suit you, just get in touch – we can switch you to a flat rate where your electricity is the same price, night and day.

If you’re pretty sure that there’s no second reading on your meter, get in touch as we might’ve received incorrect info about your meter from the industry database and need to correct it.

We understand that meter readings can sometimes be a little fiddly, so if you need a hand, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
