Powered by Octopus: How Maghull Cricket Club are making wicket savings with Shape Shifters: Agile 🏏
We love to hear how our customers are benefiting from our smart tariffs.
So, we dropped a visit to Maghull Cricket Club, a sports charity based in Liverpool.
They joined Octopus Energy for Business because they share our passion for sustainability and doing the right thing for the community. They switched to Shape Shifters to take control of their energy prices.
Shape Shifters: Agile is our dynamic business tariff that gives you cheaper electricity, nearly all day.
With Agile, your prices differ every half-hour, in line with wholesale energy costs. By using power during cheaper periods, you can take control of your energy savings.
Let’s take a deep dive and see how Maghull is hitting 6’s and saving on their energy with Shape Shifters.
Meet Maghull Cricket Club: championing community and inclusivity, one inning at a time

Maghull Cricket Club’s heritage dates back to 1926 - where they formed their 1st friendly team. Since the 70’s, they’ve been going toe-to-toe in the amateur leagues across Liverpool's districts.
But they’re not just about chasing runs and trophies. They’ve built a reputation as a community-first club, where anyone can walk to the crease.
From nine-year-olds taking their guard for the first time, to veterans chasing centuries - there’s always a wicket waiting at Maghull.
But like many small charities, every penny has to go a long way. So, Maghull is finding smarter ways to keep the game alive for the community.
Meet Derek - Maghull Cricket Club’s charismatic groundsman

Derek was kind enough to open Maghull CC’s doors for us, even with his hands covered in chalk.
He’s been at the club for 20 years, as he believes in the positive impact it has on the community.
“I love the club. After I retired, I wanted to stay busy and help out the community. Volunteering here lets me stay in touch with people and catch the games too."
You really are a credit to your community Derek.
How is Shape Shifters helping their club out?
“Running a cricket club can be expensive. The equipment alone costs us thousands of pounds.”
This is where Shape Shifters comes in. The tariff is reducing Maghull’s energy bills, so they can focus on keeping the club in top condition.
How is Maghull Cricket Club set up to save with Shape Shifters: Agile?
It’s important for a community club like Maghull to keep energy costs low. So, with the help of government grants and sponsors, Maghull invested in some low-carbon technology.
And, to stop them from being stumped by bills, they also decided to switch to Shape Shifters. Here’s how the club is using snazzy tech and Agile to bring their bills down by 65%:

- Solar panels: these generate renewable power and bring it directly into the business when Agile prices are high
- Battery storage: can store power from the grid when prices are lower and the club isn’t busy. Then they can use it when it’s busiest at the club pub during match days and events
- EV chargers: for members and visitors making the switch to electric cars - customers can charge their vehicles when Agile prices are lower
- An air source heat pump: to heat and cool the clubhouse

We asked their Chairperson Adam if they would recommend Shape Shifters to other businesses. Here’s what he had to say:
Yes I would, if you can move your consumption from the grid outside of the peak hours. We’ve seen such a big saving, so I couldn’t recommend it more.”
Thanks for showing us how Agile is working for you Maghull ❤️
