Introducing Tenant Power

Supercharging social housing, one solar panel at a time

Tenant Power is an electricity tariff built specifically for social housing.

It shares the benefits of solar and battery systems between tenants and landlords — lowering tenants’ energy bills while giving landlords a return on their investment.

One system. Shared benefits. Everyone wins.

What does Tenant Power mean for me?

For tenants

Tenant Power lowers the cost of your home electricity use, without changing how your energy supply works

  • Pay a discounted electricity unit rate compared to our standard variable tariff
  • No change to how or when you use energy
  • Available to new and existing Octopus customers
  • Cleaner energy from solar generated at your home
  • Typical tenant savings can be up to £200 per year* compared to a standard variable tariff

For landlords

Tenant Power helps you unlock value from solar and battery systems while actively supporting your tenants

  • Earn income from renewable generation installed at your properties
  • No impact on tenants’ energy use or behaviour
  • Simple monthly reporting for invoicing
  • A practical way to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across your housing stock

How does Tenant Power work?

1. The landlord offers Tenant Power to the tenant, asking whether they’d like to join

2. The landlord installs an approved solar and battery system (if not already installed)

3. The tenant switches to the Tenant Power tariff and agrees to our T&Cs (available to new and existing Octopus customers)

4. The tenant receives discounted monthly electricity bills

5. The landlord receives a monthly report showing the energy generated, which they invoice against. Simple!

How do I sign up?

Tenants

If your landlord offers Tenant Power, they should have shared a link to sign up. If not, get in touch with us, we're happy to help!

If your landlord doesn't offer Tenant Power yet, you can contact them to see if they'd like to. We’ve created a simple email to help you get started.

Landlords

If you’re a local authority or housing association, you can partner with Octopus Energy to offer Tenant Power across your homes.

To get started, you’ll sign a partnership agreement with us. Homes can then be made Tenant Power ready by installing compatible solar panels, a battery and sub-meter. Each home also needs a smart meter and an internet connection (this can be installed alongside the battery).

FAQs

Tenants

Do I have to be with Octopus Energy?

×

Yes. Octopus Energy is currently the only supplier offering the Tenant Power tariff.

Can I leave Octopus in the future?

×

Yes. You can leave at any time, but you’ll lose the Tenant Power discount if you do.

Does Tenant Power mean I wont have to pay a standing charge?

×

No. You’ll still pay an electricity standing charge.

The standing charge for Tenant Power is the same as Flexible Octopus standing charge, and the discount doesn’t apply here. This charge covers the fixed costs of keeping your home connected to the grid (e.g. network maintenance). For more information on standing charges, please see here.

Landlords

Can I join if I am a private landlord?

×

At the moment, this product is solely for housing associations and local authorities. This may open up to others in the future. Watch this space.

Can I use my WH:SHF or any other funding for Tenant Power?

×

Yes - any funding can be used. The idea is that tenant power gives a return on solar and battery install so makes funding like WH:SHF go further. Returns from the solar and battery can go into installing more systems across all your properties saving a greater number of your tenants on their bills faster.

Do I need planning permission for Tenant Power?

×

No, solar and battery is allowed under permitted development.

Who installs and owns the solar and battery?

×

You do.

There are no long-term contracts, no roof rental agreements, and no third-party ownership. As the landlord, you fund, install and own the solar panels and battery systems.

Octopus Energy provides the smart tariff that makes Tenant Power work, helping you share the benefits of the renewable energy you generate with your tenants, while earning a return on your investment.

Claims explained

*For example, a 30% discount off our standard variable tariff (based on the price cap as of May 2025 and OFGEM typical electricity use of 2,700kWh/yr) could save around £200 per year. This is subject to change.
