    Good to know...

Intelligent Octopus Go is reliant on the UK's smart meter network, which means there can occasionally be issues we don't have control over.

Some industry-standard tech (like In-Home Displays) might not work perfectly, and some processes like installations may take longer than we'd like.

This product is right at the cutting edge of energy tech, so very occasionally, some things might not work the first time.

Save £100s with Intelligent Octopus Go

Answer a couple of questions about your EV and home and we'll give you an estimate of how much you could save with the Intelligent Octopus Go savings calculator.

With Intelligent Octopus Go you'll save when charging your EV and on the energy use of your whole home with:

    • Up to 6 hours of smart charging at off-peak rates - no matter when

    • 6 hours of cheap, green energy for your whole home every night

    • How much you'll save depends on how often you smart charge your EV and how much of your home's electricity you use during off-peak hours.

For example, considering OctopusFixed prices vs Intelligent Octopus rates (available on March 17th), an EV owner driving 7,000 miles/year could save £271 by switching to Intelligent Octopus Go.

Energy prices are especially volatile at the moment, and individual savings may vary. Check rates on our website.

    That's based on:

    • 2700 kWh/year of energy usage for a typical 2-3 bedroom home

    • 0.306 kWh/mile (last checked March 2026) for a typical EV

    • The EV is always smart charged at home for a maximum of 6 hours/day

    • 13.98% of energy used during off-peak hours. Based on the consumption behaviour of the typical Octopus customer

IO GO annual savings vs standard energy tariff
Intelligent Octopus Go is the UK’s most popular EV tariff

Since we launched the UK’s first EV tariff Octopus Go in 2018, more and more EV drivers have switched to Octopus to charge their car for less.

In their latest State of the market report, Ofgem shared that 502k domestic customers were on a Smart Time of Use EV tariff in January 2024. More than half were with Octopus, and the majority of them charged with Intelligent Octopus Go.

Save 85% vs public charging when you power up at home with Intelligent Octopus Go. From April 1st.

A slow or fast charge (<50 kWh) with one of the UK’s public charging points costs an EV driver 54p/kWh on average (last checked March 2026). With Intelligent Octopus Go, you smart charge for only 8p/kWh from April 1st and save 85%.

    1 - 8/54 = 0.85 or 85%

Cut your EV charging costs by up to 68% vs a standard tariff with Intelligent Octopus Go. From April 1st.

With Intelligent Octopus Go you can smart charge for only 8p/kWh starting April 1st. This is because the UK government is reducing energy costs from April 1. The average rate of a standard variable tariff, based on the April 2026 Ofgem energy price cap, is 24.67p/kWh.

    1- 8/24.67 = 0.68 or 68%

Your EV charger could pay for itself in a year if you switch from public charging to home charging on Intelligent Octopus Go

The average EV driver who relies only on public charging spends around £1,543 a year on charging.

    C*D*B = 7,100 miles*0.306 kwh/mile *0.71 £/kWh = £1,542.55

With an EV home charger and a smart home tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go, you could pay as little as 8p per kWh when you smart charge your EV. This could bring your annual charging cost down to just £174.

    C*D*E = 7,100 miles*0.306 kwh/mile *0.08 £/kWh = £173.81

That’s a saving of up to £1,369 every year on Intelligent Octopus Go against public charging. Our chargers start from £1,049 for a standard installation and could pay for themselves in under 12 months.

Comparison assumes you drive 7,100 miles/year and currently charge only on public chargers vs. only smart charging at home for a maximum 6 hours a day with an Octopus EV charger (including standard installation, check if that works for your home) on Intelligent Octopus Go (check if you're eligible) at 8p/kWh smart charging rate. Actual savings vary.

A - From 1,049 Cost for standard Octopus EV Charger installation

    B - £0.71 weighted average of public charging prices. Based on zapmap (75% at 76 p/kWh and 25% usage at 54 p/kWh).

    C - 7,100 average annual mileage (gov.uk)

D - 0.306 kWh/mile average electric car efficiency (EV database)

E - 8p/kWh Intelligent Octopus smart charging rate
