Will Intelligent Octopus Go work for me?
Need some extra detail?
Intelligent Octopus Go is the UK’s most popular EV tariff
Since we launched the UK’s first EV tariff Octopus Go in 2018, more and more EV drivers have switched to Octopus to charge their car for less.
In their latest State of the market report, Ofgem shared that 653k domestic customers were on a Smart Time of Use EV tariff in July 2025. More than half were with Octopus, and the majority of them charged with Intelligent Octopus Go.
Our customers typically saved £771 last year compared to our standard tariff
Over the last year (May 2025 to April 2026), customers on our fixed Intelligent Octopus Go tariff typically saved £771 compared to our standard variable tariff, Flexible Octopus.
Calculations are based on comparing actual half-hourly consumption and costs on Intelligent Octopus Go against the costs the customer would have incurred for that same consumption on our Flexible Octopus tariff. Savings for individual homes vary based on how much electricity you use for your house and EV, and how much you shift towards off-peak hours. Get a quote to compare your rates.
When we expect energy to be cheaper and often greener
Plug in your car, tell us how much charge you need, and Intelligent Octopus Go will get to work in the background to automatically schedule your charge for when energy is expected to be cheaper and often greener.
To do that, Intelligent Octopus Go uses price signals from the wholesale market and schedules your charge during the cheapest half-hourly periods. That's usually when energy is expected to be greener. Read more about the correlation of greener energy and wholesale prices here and here, or see Intelligent Octopus Go in the smart energy ecosystem.
Save up to 68% on charging compared to average price cap rates
With Intelligent Octopus Go, you can smart charge eligible cars for only 8p/kWh. The average electricity unit rate of a standard variable tariff, based on the April 2026 Ofgem energy price cap for customers paying by direct debit, is 24.67p/kWh. This represents a saving of 68% compared to the average price cap unit rate (1- 8/24.67 = 0.68 or 68%).
Please note that savings apply to unit rates only and exclude standing charges. Standard variable rates vary by region, so your actual percentage saving may vary depending on where you live. Check the price cap for your region here.
What's smart charging?
We connect to your car or charging equipment through the Octopus app. You tell us what time you need your car by and how much charge you need. Then, across all the hours you’re plugged in, we’ll charge your car when energy is expected to be cheaper and often greener and charge you the off-peak rate for up to 6 hours a day.
If you need to charge your car immediately, use the “bump charge” button. Bump charges will be charged at your Intelligent Octopus Go day rate, and you can stop this charge from the app at any time.
