How to connect your low-carbon tech in a Zero Bills home
If you live in a Zero Bills home, connecting your low-carbon tech is a must.
It lets us run everything smartly in the background, helping keep your home energy bills at £0 (within your fair use cap).
Below you’ll find simple, step-by-step guides to help you connect each bit of low-carbon tech in your home. This only needs doing once, and usually takes a few minutes.
To stay on the Zero Bills tariff, all eligible low-carbon tech needs to be connected. If something isn’t connected, we may need to move your home off Zero Bills — but don’t worry, we’ll always try to help you get setup first. If you get stuck at any point, please do get in touch: hello@octopus.energy.
Got an EV? EV charging isn’t included in your Zero Bills tariff. Instead, it’s billed on Intelligent Octopus Go, ensuring you still benefit from ultra-low overnight charging rates.
To access these savings — and remain eligible for Zero Bills — your EV or charger must be connected to our platform. This allows us to accurately separate your driving costs from your living costs. Find out more

FAQs
Why do I have to connect my car charger?
Zero Bills is designed to cover your home’s essential energy. However, charging an EV is like adding the energy usage of a second house — it’s a huge amount of power!
To keep the Zero Bills model fair and sustainable for everyone, we separate your "home" energy from your "driving" energy. By connecting your charger to Intelligent Octopus Go, we can:
- Carve out your car's usage: This ensures your EV charging doesn't "pollute" your Zero Bills home tariff.
- Get you the cheapest rates: Your charger automatically tops up your car when the wires are overflowing with cheap energy.
It’s the "tech handshake" that keeps your home bill at zero and your driving costs as low as possible.
Why does my housebuilder have to transfer my Tesla battery?
When you move into your Zero Bills home, your Tesla Powerwall is already installed and running. During construction, the builder holds the "master key" so their electricians can test the system and make sure your home is energy-efficient from day one. They just need to tell Tesla that you are the new owner.
The quickest way to get this sorted is to set up a Tesla account first, then email your housebuilder’s customer service team or your site manager. They need to "invite" your email address to take over the Powerwall in their Tesla portal.
Send this email to your builder:
Subject: Urgent: Tesla Powerwall Ownership Transfer - [Your House Number & Street Name]
Hi [Builder Name/Site Manager],
I have now moved into [Your Address] and I'm trying to link my Tesla Powerwall to my Octopus account. I need you to transfer the ownership status to my Tesla account.
My email address is: [The email address you signed up to Tesla with]
What happens next?
- Check your Tesla App: Once the builder does their bit, you’ll get a notification or email from Tesla.
- Accept the invite: Follow the prompts to become the official owner.
- Back to Octopus: Now you can head back into the Octopus app, go to Devices, and finish the connection!
Hey I'm Constantine, welcome to Octopus Energy!
