School’s Out: Octopus Electric Vehicles customers get exclusive discounted EV charging rate in time for holiday travel

  • ‘Intelligent Octopus Go - EV Saver’ tariff offers Octopus EV customers 6p per kWh off-peak rate
  • Drivers can save more than £1,000 every year on fuelling costs compared to a petrol car
  • Holiday drivers can travel from London to Cornwall for under £5

London, 22nd July, 2024 - Octopus Electric Vehicles (Octopus EV), the UK’s largest EV-only lease company, has launched an exclusive discounted energy tariff for their EV leasing customers in time for the school holidays, putting more cash in customer’s pockets to enjoy summer holiday fun.

‘Intelligent Octopus Go - EV Saver’ is offered through sister company Octopus Energy, and provides a discounted off-peak rate of just 6p per kWh exclusively for Octopus EV customers - saving an average driver roughly £1,076 per year versus fueling a petrol car.

The discounted tariff comes just in time for families to get cheap energy for their school summer holidays. An average EV on the EV Saver tariff could travel from London to Cornwall for under £5 - compared to roughly £30 in a petrol car - less than the cost of a coffee and pastry on the journey.

The new tariff is a cheaper version of the UK’s most popular EV tariff - ‘Intelligent Octopus Go’ - which has more than 160,000 customers and manages well over 1GW of shiftable electricity, the UKs largest virtual power plant.

EV charging is not only cheaper, it’s also easier than fuelling a fossil fuel car. Customers can use the Octopus Energy app to set the time they want their vehicle ready and what the level of charge should be. Octopus’ tech platform, Kraken, then works in the background to charge up when the grid is greenest.

Market share of pure electric EVs is nearing 20%* - with over one million satisfied battery-only car drivers on UK roads. By 2028 industry experts predict that figure will increase by 500,000 units every year **. Drivers have more cars than ever to choose from, with Octopus EV offering more than 80 models across 33 manufacturers.

Fiona Howarth, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, commented: “Too often we only focus on the sticker price of an electric car, and forget the huge ‘fuel’ savings to be made [when on the right tariff]. What’s more, outright prices of new models entering the market are coming down, with consumer choice ramping up.

With school holidays upon us, and many of us making some of the longer trips we’ll take this year, our drivers can get away knowing they’ve got the best value tariff around.”

Octopus EV has grown to become the largest EV-only lease provider in the UK, with more than 19,000 cars on the road. Octopus’ all-in-one service provides drivers with everything they need to take the road: a leased car, charger, charging tariff and access to public charging through Octopus Electroverse.
