How could I save £549 with Octopus Go?

With Octopus Go you'll save when charging your EV and on the energy use of your whole home with 5 hours of cheap, green energy for your whole home every night.

How much you'll save depends on how often you charge your EV and how much of your home's electricity you use during off-peak hours.

For example, considering energy prices in July 2024, a Jaguar I‑PACE owner driving around 10,000 miles/year and living in a typical large-sized home could save £549 by switching to Octopus Go.

That's based on:

  • The Jaguar I‑PACE using 0.382 kWh/mile
  • An average large-sized home using 4,100 kWh/year
  • 8.82% of household consumption takes place during off-peak hours. Based on the consumption behaviour of the typical Octopus customer

What unit rates and standing charge will I pay on the Go tariff?

The Go tariff features two unit rates:

  • A peak unit price – the price you'll be charged per unit of energy you use most of the time, between 05:30 and 00:30. This rate varies depending where you are in the UK.
  • An off-peak unit price – what you'll be charged per unit of energy used between 00:30 and 05.30. This is 8.5p / kWh, no matter where you are.

There's also a standing charge, which again varies depending where you live in the UK.

You can check what unit rates and standing charge apply in your area here:

Do I need a smart meter to get on Go?

Yes. Go's innovative pricing is only possible through smart meter tech. We need to be able to link to your smart meter automatically too, which means to get on Go, you must have a SMETS2 or Secure SMETS1 smart meter that we can take half hourly readings from.

What if I don't want to get up at 1am to turn my charger on?

Fear not. We have partnerships with a few different smart charging trailblazers, like Ohme, the UK's first smart home charging cable, which can automatically turn charge mode on when the 'off-peak' charging period kicks in.

Can I use my cheap charging period for anything other than charging my car?

Of course! During this four hour period, any electricity you use will be charged at 8.5p / kWh.

You can even automate stuff to come on using smart plugs and neat, simple to set up integrations with Alexa and IFTTT – check out some smart home hacks from our brilliant customers.

Is there a Go gas tariff?

No. Octopus Go is an electricity tariff, created for drivers to charge their electric cars. This kind of smart tariff passes on the benefits of the UK electricity market's wholesale prices, which are highly variable through the day. Wholesale gas prices don’t really vary throughout the day, so a Go gas tariff wouldn't really be able to have that same amazing off-peak rate.

If you're a dual fuel customer, we can supply you gas too, of course. Just choose one of our standard gas tariffs, which you can get a quote for any time at

Can I be an electricity-only customer, and get my gas from another supplier?

Yes - choose 'electricity only' at signup.

Can I use Octopus Go with my export tariff?

We’ve created a new tariff called Outgoing Fixed Lite, which gives Octopus Go customers export rates of 8p/kWh. You can sign up to the tariff here.

Are other Octopus tariffs available?

Can I use Octopus Go in more than one property?

No, the tariff is linked to a single property.

Is Go suitable for multiple car households?

Yes. You can use the Go tariff to charge more than one car.

What happens to the off-peak period during daylight savings?

Number one and most important: no matter what your IHD says, your off-peak period stays between 00:30 and 05:30.

Why is my IHD saying something different?

This SHOULD be straightforward – but some customers have noticed that their in-home display (part of the smart meter infrastructure) shows the cheap rate kicking in at 01:30 following a clock change.

On your bills, it'll say the cheap period starts at 00:30. This is obviously pretty confusing, and makes it hard to know which is correct. The challenge is that the IHD is not “determining” anything. It’s just displaying some information, and in the journey from Octopus to DCC (the government’s data company, which handles smart meter data), to TMA (a company who connect Octopus’s smart meters to DCC), to the comms hub (a regulated device which carries the signal to the smart meter), to the smart meter itself, to the IHD (which sits on a different network, established by your electricity meter) there are many steps – each of which may pass the time signal as it is, or may “helpfully” correct it from GMT to BST etc.

There are quite a few different ways to get a message to the IHD and some are simpler than others, but allow less functionality – so we’re trying to use the smartest way... but it’s also the most complex.

Terms and conditions

To benefit from the £50 credit, you'll need to be a new or existing customer of Octopus Energy and have purchased a Jaguar electric vehicle or plug-in electric hybrid vehicle.

New and existing customers will be eligible for £50 credit on their energy account when they switch via this referral link to any Octopus gas and/or electricity tariff. Provided Jaguar Land Rover has validated the customer as a legitimate Jaguar electric or plug-in electric hybrid owner using their Vehicle Identification Number the credit will be applied to your account once the account is on supply and the first direct debit payment has been taken.

You will not be eligible for the credit if you sign up via a third party like a price comparison site.

To benefit from the Octopus Go tariff, you must have a smart meter Octopus can receive half-hourly consumption data from.

The suitability of a smart meter depends on various factors including strength of signal, access to meter and complexity of meter set up. If a customer's house is not suitable for a smart meter, then the customer will still be eligible for the £50 credit if they join a different Octopus tariff to Octopus Go.

If you qualify for more than one type of marketing incentive or have already received a joining reward, we reserve the right to give you just one incentive.

Your contract with Octopus Energy, as set out in our Terms and Conditions, starts when you accept the Terms and Conditions as part of our Application process.

1 Savings calculated by comparing a typical EV-owning household’s consumption on Octopus Go rates vs. Octopus’s Standard Variable Tariff (SVT) rates.

Electric vehicle charging consumption has been calculated assuming a 3818kWh/year estimated annual consumption (EAC) for charging alone. This is based on the assumption that the driver will cover 10,000 miles/year using a Jaguar I‑PACE with an efficiency of 0.382 kWh/mile (84kWh usable battery capacity and real world range of 220 miles).

Plug-in electric hybrid vehicle charging consumption has been calculated assuming 5,000 miles/year are covered by the battery, and depending on the individual car's efficiency.

The Octopus Go calculation assumes all charging is done between 00:30-05:30, at the off-peak rate, and the driver is living in an average large-sized home using 4,100kWh/year (excluding their charging consumption).

The Octopus Go calculation assumes 8.82% of household consumption takes place during off-peak hours, based on the consumption behaviour of typical Octopus customers.
