Octopus Supergreen Tariff

Our greenest tariff for only a few extra £ per month

Renewable World

100% carbon-neutral energy

Octopus Super Green tariff is the very greenest you can be with Octopus.

We provide 100% renewable electricity as standard plus you get 100% carbon-neutral gas.

By offsetting your gas, we can reduce your annual net carbon emissions from the energy you use at home, down to zero.

Did you know: over 20% of the UK’s carbon emissions comes from the energy we all use at home? ¹

Renewable World

Offsetting your gas emissions

We fund Gold Verifiedcarbon reduction projects through our partner Renewable World. Every year we buy carbon credits from our partners to offset the gas emissions of our Super Green customers.

Renewable World projects bring low-carbon technologies to areas with limited access to safe, reliable energy. These clean energy hubs bring whole new income streams into the communities and return agency to local people and businesses who’ve been constrained by unreliable, high-polluting energy sources. By funding these projects we can promote the use of clean energy and prevent more carbon emissions going into the atmosphere.

What is Octopus Super Green Tariff?

×

Octopus Super Green Tariff This fixed tariff is the very greenest you can be with Octopus with a fully carbon neutral energy plan! All Octopus electricity tariffs are 100% renewable as standard - (read about where our energy comes from here), plus, on Super Green, any gas you use is fully carbon offset through our partner Renewable World who we work with to choose Gold Standard Verified projects - learn more here. Carbon emission data is calculated using BEIS 2020 emission factors. Supergreen Octopus has no exit fees.

How much does Super Green cost?

×

We believe green should be the easy choice, so we offer Super Green at only £1 extra a month to our fixed tariff costs. That’s less than the cost of a coffee (or 4 Freddo’s).

Do I have to get a smart meter?

×

You do not have to get a smart meter for the Super Green tariff, however, smart meters are the cornerstone of a smarter, greener energy system. They're more convenient (no more meter readings), they help you keep track of your energy usage. Register your interest here: Smart Meters

What makes Super Green carbon neutral?

×

On the Octopus Super Green tariff, in addition to the 100% renewable electricity available with our standard plans (fuel mix found here), we also provide 100% carbon-neutral gas (100% offset - read why we don’t use green gas here). This involves offsetting the carbon emissions involved in the production of your gas. The renewable electricity we sell is backed by renewable certificates (Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates (REGOs)). See here for details on Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates and how these work. We offset the remaining emissions by supporting Renewable World’s Gold Standard certified carbon reduction projects. See here for more information on how we support tech poor communities with our offsetting programmes.

What is carbon offsetting?

×

Everyone has a carbon footprint, measured in terms of tonnes of carbon emitted per year. In order to neutralise the carbon emissions we are responsible for, such as our energy usage, we can support schemes that take carbon out of the atmosphere or stop them entering it in the first place. By working with carbon reduction projects we can buy carbon offset credits (which each equal 1 tonne of carbon) in order to balance out the negative emissions of your gas usage. Offsetting your gas usage in addition to your 100% renewable electricity means your home energy usage becomes ‘carbon neutral’.

Who are Renewable World?

×

Renewable World are a charity that brings low-carbon technologies to areas with limited access to safe, reliable energy. These clean energy hubs bring whole new income streams into the communities and return agency to local people and businesses who’ve been constrained by unreliable, high-polluting energy sources.

Why don’t you use green gas?

×

Biomethane, or biogas, is offered by some of our fellow green suppliers. Biogas is made from organic matter such as animal and food waste and can be added to the gas system (it currently accounts for around 4% in the UK). However, apart from being very expensive for customers, large scale production is not yet possible and we do not believe it is the best route longer term. We want to ditch gas for good. So, instead of investing in biogas, our approach is to invest in clean electricity initiatives to build a world where we do not need gas at all.

What happens if I want to cancel my Super Green Tariff?

×

As with any Octopus tariff, you can cancel anytime.

What is Renewable Energy?

×

Also known as ‘green energy’ renewable energy is energy that is collected from resources that naturally replenish themselves, such as sunlight, wind, rivers and geothermal heat. This is in contrast to non-renewable sources such as coal and oil which do not replenish within a human lifetime and also pollute the environment. At Octopus we use renewable energy sources primarily from wind, solar and hydro (water) sources to power our 100% green electricity. As over 85% of the UK still use gas in their homes, we also provide our Super Green tariff where customers can offset the carbon emissions produced by the gas part of their home energy usage.

  1. In the UK, our home energy counts for at least 20% of our carbon footprint - This is taken from the government’s 2020 greenhouse emissions report(published March 2021). The individual % of carbon footprint will vary from person to person depending on lifestyle but 20% can be taken as an indicative proportion.
