We’re looking for someone to lead marketing for the Octopus Energy domestic retail business in the UK
Octopus Energy Group is an energy tech company, we’re 5 years old and we’re changing the industry. We launched in 2016 with a vision of using technology to make the green energy revolution affordable whilst transforming customer experiences.
We already supply over 1.8 million customers with cheaper greener power in the UK alone, with operations in Germany, Australia and the USA. Octopus Energy for Business supplies 20,000 customers with proprietary energy offerings, Octopus Electric Vehicles helps make clean transport cheaper and easier, and Octopus Energy Services is bringing smart products to thousands of homes.
Octopus Energy Group's tech arm, Kraken Technologies enables much of our innovation. It offers a proprietary, in-house platform based on advanced data and machine learning capabilities and automates much of the energy supply chain to allow outstanding service and efficiency as the world transitions to a decentralised, decarbonised energy system. Kraken tech has been licensed to support over 17 million accounts worldwide, through deals with Good Energy, E.ON energy, Hanwha and Origin Energy.
We’re looking for someone to lead marketing for the Octopus Energy domestic retail business in the UK, but there’s probably some things you should know…
We don’t use agencies - we really don’t, not for creative, production, or even media. We’ve a fabulous team of in-house designers, UX, writers and front enders. We do our own media buying. You could say, in fact, that we’re half agency, but we’re your most favouritest ever client, the one you secretly yearned to work at.
We’re pretty obsessive. We think about our customers a lot. A lot a lot. We answer emails from customers, we join in on social media (and I mean we, as leaders do), we think constantly about what makes great experiences, great stories and great reasons for people to join us.
We’re looking for someone who’s worked their way round the marketing mix and can trot out some good metrics, but actually, what you really really know, is humans. You can put together a brand pyramid, but it makes you cry inside a little bit, because actually you feel what a brand is, why people choose it (even where that might seem illogical), and you’re just a little bit fascinated about why people make the choices they do.
You’ve led a team, and we don’t mean just managing FTEs - you’ll happily work with no direct reports, because your enthusiasm means awesome people will follow you, and you’ll get stuff done. You’ll have direct reports but you won’t measure your worth in how many, in fact the opposite.
You’re a grafter, but you’re a smart grafter, you put effort where you know it delivers the most value - writing out an agenda for a meeting kills a little bit of your soul.
You’ve a burning desire to turn your skills to something meaningful. You enjoy the pace of the commercial world, but you’d rather not flog FMCG any more, you’d want to be delivering something more sustainable to the world.
And finally. We have to be honest, we find that people from traditional businesses often struggle here. We don’t work to backlogs, we don’t write business cases but we prioritise effectiveness and efficiency above all else. We expect accountability without process, and responsibility without functional shoulder pads. We get stuff done by knowing what’s right, and sometimes that’s hard.
This will be a senior role, reporting into the Global Director of Product & Marketing and looking after the brand and its growth in the UK.
